Kiama Unplugged

Kiama Unplugged We wish to encourage our community to take a step back from smart phones and social media and reconnect with their community.

We want to give our children and teens a childhood back, enjoy free play and connect with their peers in the real world. Kiama Unplugged has a simple goal, to get Kiama to disconnect from smartphones and social media so we can connect as a community. We are two local parents, who want our own children to have a childhood, away from smart phones and social media. We are not specialists in mental he

alth or Doctors, but two parents who came to the same conclusion. Is there a different way to introduce smartphones and social media to the next generation of kids?

Thank you People Magazine for sharing the Wait Until 8th pledge with your readers! Story highlights include:

A group of parents has gone viral after delaying smartphones for their children with the Wait Until 8th pledge — and instead giving them landline phones to stay connected safely.

For parents Meg Kate and Kyle McAlarney, delaying smartphone use has become a deliberate choice rooted in both community and nostalgia.

In their then-7-year-old daughter’s first-grade year, the McAlarneys, along with other parents in the class, signed a “Wait Until 8th” pledge, an agreement among families to hold off on giving their children smartphones until the end of eighth grade.

“For us, it’s about delaying that step as long as we can and letting [our children] enjoy real conversations before introducing all the distractions that come with screens,” Meg, 40, tells PEOPLE exclusively.

This past Christmas, as a meaningful and nostalgic compromise, the McAlarneys and a group of other parents from their daughter's third-grade class all decided to get their children Tin Can landline phones for Christmas.

“We wanted [Maddie’s] first experience with having a phone to feel simple and intentional, not overwhelming,” Meg explains, noting that her daughter’s landline was gifted to her by her grandmother living in New York.

“The Tin Can phone felt like a great middle ground, it gives her a way to stay in touch with friends when school’s out and connect with family who live out of state, without jumping straight into a smartphone," the mom of three adds.

According to the company’s website, Tin Can is a screen-free, kid-friendly home phone that allows children to call and receive calls only from approved contacts, offering a sense of independence without internet access or smartphone risks.

Read the full story at People Magazine , including more on the parents' “Wait Until 8th” pledge for smartphones and how the girls have responded to their new landline phones.

Thanks to our local MP Katelin McInerney for coming to support us at the Kiama Farmers' Market today. It was so good to chat to so many local kids, teens and adults about the social media delay law and what it means to them. Thank you to everyone who came along and engaged with us today, and to all the wonderful stall holders for their donations for our lucky dip. For anyone who didn't get to pop down, watch this space for more information on our new design competition, and lots of exciting plans for 2026!

I popped into the Kiama Unplugged and Headspace Kiama stalls today for a chat as the social media ban for under 16s gets underway.

While the introduction of the ban is a good step in the right direction, our young people will need more support over the coming holiday period and into the next school year adjusting to their new social-media free norm.

All of us can do our bit to check in over the summer period with the young people in our lives, and it is great to see Unplugged offering great screen free alternatives for real world connection in our beautiful backyard. For more information on the social media delay for families check eSafety Commissioner, get advice from Maggie Dent and join some epic family friendly adventure ideas in our own backyard!
