This week our Guest Speaker was Reece Gregory, the Coordinator of Youth Activities at the Kiama Surf Lifesaving Club “Nippers”. It was interesting to hear about the social and skills activities on offer to very young children in our coastal community. A big group of parent volunteers turn up every week during the season to take the Nippers through a program of swimming, board skills, surf awareness and for some, the “Flags” beach sprinting at its finest. Reece said, “Before you get into the water for a rescue, you must be able to run on the sand just to get there”. The club, especially the Nippers, is developing a core training and development program that is proving beneficial as the numbers grow each year, but they are still looking for volunteers, retaining the older kids as they move to cadets, storage facilities, and funding for this growth.
