This is one of the reasons The Everyday Table exists.

An article published this week highlights something we know all too well: food hardship is no longer something that only affects people on the “edges” of society.

Families are feeling the pressure of housing costs, mortgages, utilities and everyday expenses. Some are cutting back on fresh food. Some are skipping meals. And many are doing everything they can to keep a roof over their heads while quietly struggling to put food on the table.

And this is exactly why, when you walk through the doors of The Everyday Table, you will never find eligibility requirements.

We don’t ask what your income is.
We don’t ask what happened.
We don’t ask whether you really need it.

Because we don’t know what the person standing next to us is carrying.

Maybe they need a little help putting food on the table this week.

Maybe they’ve just had a really hard month.

Maybe they’re working, paying a mortgage, raising a family and finding that everything has suddenly become a little harder.

Or maybe the helping hand they need isn’t actually a bag of groceries.

Maybe it’s sitting around a shared table, eating a warm meal, having a conversation and having someone smile at them.

We believe community should work like this.

When you have more than you need, you build a longer table, not a higher fence.

There is no shame in needing a helping hand. And there is no greater privilege than being able to offer one.

The Everyday Table is all about community.

Building community. Supporting community. And creating opportunities for people to come together, share, learn and connect.

Last Wednesday, we welcomed Ridz from Fish n chips | Burgers | Takeaway | Grab n Go , who came along to show us how to make a pretty spectacular chai masala from scratch.

And honestly… she made it look easy! ☕️

But what we love most is the willingness to share.

We’re so grateful to Ridz for sharing her knowledge with our community, for supporting what happens at The Everyday Table, and to her husband Deep for continuing to support us through the lunch around the table — free lunch for everyone in our community.

These moments are what The Everyday Table is about.

Not just food, but people.

Not just a meal, but connection.

Not just giving, but sharing what we have with one another.

Because when you have more than you need, you build a longer table, not a higher fence.

Communities don’t become strong by accident. They’re built when people choose to care for one another, share what they have, and invest in the lives of those around them.

Yesterday, our community experienced that in a very practical way. The wonderful team at Saltwater Cafe and Restaurant Kiama generously provided lunch for The Everyday Table, serving their delicious signature chowder. It was warmly received and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who came through our doors.

Acts of generosity like this remind us that businesses can be so much more than places to buy a mea, they can become places that strengthen the community around them. When leaders genuinely want to see others thrive, that heart is reflected in the way they serve, give and connect with people.

That’s why we’d love to congratulate Gulcin on being named Business Leader of the Year 2026. This recognition reflects not only outstanding leadership in business, but the kind of leadership that looks beyond its own walls and chooses to invest in others.

Thank you, Gulcin, and the entire Saltwater Cafe and Restaurant Kiama team, for your generous support of The Everyday Table and for helping build a community where people are welcomed, cared for and valued. Congratulations on this well-deserved achievement!

Community is built when people share what they have with others.

Tomorrow at The Everyday Table, we’re excited to welcome Ridz from Fish n chips | Burgers | Takeaway | Grab n Go who’ll be showing us how to make authentic chai masala from scratch. There’s something special about blending the right spices together to create that warm, comforting cup of chai; but it’s about so much more than the recipe.

It’s about people generously sharing their skills, knowledge and culture. It’s about neighbours learning from neighbours. It’s about discovering that when we each bring a little of what we have, everyone leaves richer.

That’s what The Everyday Table is all about. Not just affordable groceries or a free meal, but creating a place where relationships grow, conversations happen, and joy finds its way into corners we didn’t even realise needed lighting up.

Community doesn’t just happen—it grows when people choose to come together, share their resources, and make space for one another.

Come along tomorrow 10-1:30pm.
Chai making from 11am.
Grab a cuppa, learn something new, meet someone new, and be part of building a stronger, more connected community. 💛

One of the things we love most about community is seeing people celebrate each other’s wins.

Last week, members of The Everyday Table attended the NSW Hidden Treasures Honour Roll Awards, where the Sunday Community Support Group was recognised as Community Group of the Year. We couldn’t think of a more deserving recipient.

Their team faithfully serves people in Nowra each week with compassion, dignity and practical support, and it was wonderful to see that commitment recognised.

A few days later, we dropped off some toothbrushes, toothpaste and Lindt chocolate to Kerrys Klothes on Terralong Street, Kiama; a local collection point that helps support their weekly activities in Nowra. We love that people here in Kiama can be part of making a difference just down the road.

That’s always been the heart of The Everyday Table. We’re not trying to build an organisation for ourselves, we’re helping build a stronger community.
Sometimes that means serving people directly, and sometimes it means backing other organisations that are already doing incredible work.

To everyone who shops in our pantry, shares a meal with us, volunteers or donates, thank you. Every bit of support helps make moments like this possible.

Congratulations again to the Sunday Community Support Group. We’re proud to stand alongside you, and proud that our community can play a small part in the incredible work you’re doing. ❤️

Volunteers.

The people who choose to give their time, their energy and their hearts to make a difference in the lives of those around them.

At The Everyday Table, we are incredibly grateful for every person who gives their time to help make this community possible.

Some come for a few hours. Some come regularly. Some are young, some are older, and some are somewhere in between.

But every single person makes a difference.

Our volunteers don’t just give their time. They help create connection, conversation, welcome and community. And while they come with a desire to serve others, we often hear how much they receive in return through the relationships and connections they build along the way.

That’s the beautiful thing about community. When we give what we can, we all become part of something bigger.

The Everyday Table simply would not be possible without our incredible volunteers.

So today, we want to say thank you.

Thank you for showing up.
Thank you for giving your time.
Thank you for sharing your energy.
Thank you for welcoming others.
Thank you for helping make The Everyday Table what it is.

No matter your age, there is a place for you in community.

And to every person who has volunteered with us, whether once or every week, please know that you are deeply appreciated.

We couldn’t do this without you. 🤍
