Raising Literacy Australia

Raising Literacy Australia Raising Literacy Australia (RLA) is a not-for-profit organisation committed to enriching children’s lives through literacy.

Our goal is to actively encourage parents, carers and professionals to provide children with a strong foundation for lifelong literacy, success in formal schooling and improved life chances through promoting a love of and awareness of the importance of reading to children from birth.

Yesterday we had the joy of visiting local libraries as communities across Australia came together for National Simultaneous Storytime.

To see children laughing, joining in, listening closely and sharing stories together was incredibly special, because we know these moments help build the language, literacy and social-emotional skills needed to thrive.

We're so grateful to the Australian Library and Information Association for creating and championing this national event, and proud to see Luna Roo the Kangaroo Baller, published by our Little Book Press team, shared with millions of young readers across the country.

A huge thank you to the City of Unley, City of West Torrens and City of Playford for welcoming us.

And thank you to the librarians, educators, families, booksellers, volunteers and event organisers who made today so engaging for children everywhere.

Today marks the beginning of National Reconciliation Week.

This year’s theme, ‘All In’, calls for all Australians to commit to reconciliation every day.

We acknowledge that we all have a role to play in building communities that centre the knowledge and voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and are committed to fostering a shared path forward.

This means improving access to early language and literacy resources developed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander creators, to tell Australia’s stories from their perspective, and provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families the opportunity to see themselves, their communities and their culture reflected in books, stories and other learning materials – something we’re wholeheartedly committed to.

You will find our team at Tauondi Aboriginal College in Port Adelaide tomorrow for Reconciliation in the West, supporting Martinthi-InCompro and Uniting Care Wesley Bowden.

If you’re looking for ways to get involved with National Reconciliation Week, visit reconciliation.org.au

The artwork for this year’s campaign is by Gumbaynggirr/Bundjalung artist Otis Hope Carey.

Our Read to Me program provides high-quality, age-appropriate books to children in out-of-home care, supporting carers, deepening connections and building positive reading habits.

In 2025, we delivered more than 6,000 reading packs, with 91% of carers reporting more quality time shared with their child.

Read to Me is proudly supported by the Department for Child Protection SA, Variety SA and Cochrane's Transport, and we’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you for standing with us.

Your ongoing support of the Read to Me program is changing the lives of South Australian children from birth to 6 years in out-of-home care.

As we wrap up 2025, we’re highlighting the work that shaped our year.

We placed more than 10,000 books and play resources into children’s homes, helping them build libraries of their own.

Our Building Home Libraries program gives preschoolers and their families the tools to grow literacy skills and support early learning.

In 2026, Building Home Libraries will be available via the Department for Early Childhood Development’s Preschool Boost, as well as the Victorian School Readiness and Queensland Kindy Lift programs.
