ACF Community Brisbane West

ACF Community Brisbane West Take action for climate and nature with others in Chapel Hill, Kenmore, Indooroopilly and The Gap.

BWCN is part of a network of volunteer-run, independently organised groups in the Australian Conversation Foundation community, taking local action in Brisbane. We want to help ensure our children and grandchildren will be able to breathe fresh air, drink clean water, enjoy natural environments and live in a world with a stable climate. We also love celebrating this wonderful part of the earth on which we live!

On 23 September ACF Brisbane West teamed up with THECA (The Hut Environmental and Community Association) at the Hut in Mt Coot-tha forest for Forest Time / Wild at Art. The event was attended by seventeen primary students, a couple of high school helpers and several adult family members.

The morning began with a Butterfly Trail walk down to the bridge with Maria and Viola, after which the children were able to examine their findings under the Hut microscope. Then they worked on their art, either drawing or painting. They drew inspiration from the many beautifully illustrated books available, from what they had found on the walk, and from discussions with the volunteer helpers and each other. Morning tea was quieter than expected as we shared the verandah with a brushtail possum and her baby. We wrapped up with Carolyn reading a couple of stories about threatened Australian animals while Maria helped interpret slides.

It was fascinating to see the children's careful, skilful work take shape. Although not all of it will find its way into the competition, we all learned more about some of our most endangered and precious animals and plants and why it is so important to care and advocate for them.

We greatly value our continuing relationship with THECA and enjoyed the opportunity to work with them on what was a happy and productive event.

Seeing a Rakali in Cubberla Creek, Kenmore, was a thrilling finish to Christmas Day. Video clip is very short but the white-tipped tail of the rakali is unmistakable.
