When you volunteer with SAAS, you expect to learn lifesaving skills such as CPR, patient care, and how to use our radios.

But there’s more to it than that because emergencies don’t always happen in convenient places.

Sometimes they’re on remote farms or beaches. Where getting there safely is just as critical as what you do when you arrive.

That’s why our volunteers train for all conditions — including 4WD driving on sand hills.

Learning how to handle ambulances in difficult terrain means we can reach people wherever they need us.

It’s challenging. It’s hands-on. It can be dirty. But it’s all part of being ready.

Meet Amy, Kelly and Calvin, some of our Volunteers from Kangaroo Island and Goolwa who also work as Registered Nurses.

Each of them has been able to bring their healthcare skills into their volunteer role, using their experience to give back to their communities.

“I joined because I wanted to become a paramedic, using nursing as a pathway,” Kelly said.

“Now it complements my nursing career. It’s helped me understand how the health system works, and I do it now to help people.”

For Calvin, joining SAAS in 2021 started out as curiosity as he wanted to understand what volunteering would be like.

“I’m glad I joined as a volunteer as it has left me feeling more satisfied and being a nurse has helped me fast-track my volunteering induction,” he said.

Linda has worn the green SAAS uniform twice – and both times, it shaped who she is.

In 1999, as a parent looking for more than just being known as “mum,” she joined SAAS to become an active member of the community. Years later, in 2020, after stepping away from nursing, she returned, determined not to waste her clinical skills. Now, Linda hasn’t looked back.

Volunteering gives her flexibility, purpose, and pride. She chooses her shifts, works nights, studies during the day, and continues to give back.

Being handed the ambulance keys, first as an Assistant, then as an Ambulance Officer, marked moments of achievement, self belief, and proof that it’s never too late to succeed.

A Psychologist, local business owner and a proud dog dad to three, Luke from Yankalilla is one of this year’s volunteer ambassadors.

With experiences in disability and the aged care sector, Luke was looking for a way to give back to the community when he began volunteering at SAAS.

“Joining SAAS as a volunteer has given me the chance to learn life-saving skills and maintain a sense of calm in high-pressure situations. Every shift is different, and there is an incredible sense of fulfillment in knowing that my training can make a real difference in someone’s worst moment,” says Luke.

“I want to show young people that volunteering is the essential 'next step' in their journey, providing them with crucial skills,” he says.
