“The Inspiration Behind Binhi the Brain” — A Special Brain Health Conversation

Last Sunday, we witnessed something magical.

Nearly 200 children and more than 400 parents and grandparents from culturally and linguistically diverse communities came together in Melbourne for our inaugural Brain Health Education Event.
It was a day filled with colour, laughter, storytelling — and powerful conversations about brain health for all ages.

One character captured every child’s heart:
🌱 Binhi the Brain — our new brain mascot and the star of our children’s colouring-book series.

This Wednesday at 6.00 pm AEST, join Professor Tissa Wijeratne and Sarah Mcpartland , the brilliant young designer behind Binhi, for an inspiring live discussion:

🧠 How Binhi was born
🎨 The story behind the multicultural colouring-book pages
🌍 Why this program is transforming brain-health education for diverse communities
👧🏽👦🏻 How children from more than a dozen cultural backgrounds connected instantly with Binhi
đź’¬ How a simple mascot became a bridge between generations, languages, and cultures

Sarah will share how she wanted every child — Arabic, Filipino, Vietnamese, Indian, Sri Lankan, African, and more — to see themselves reflected and included.
And how Binhi grew into a joyful, accessible way for families to learn about sleep, exercise, reading, friendships, mental wellbeing, and migraine awareness.

This is more than an interview.
It is the beginning of a movement — brain health through creativity, culture, and community connection.

đź“… Live on Wednesday, 27 November
⏰ 6:00 PM AEST
📍 Streaming on Facebook & YouTube
🎥 Tune in, share, and invite your community.

Let’s build a future where every child understands their brain — and every family feels included in the journey.

What a special night at the Western Health Medical Awards 2025. Migraine Foundation Australia was proud to be one of the sponsors, but the real highlight came from an act of pure generosity that brought so much heart into the room.

Thanks to the kindness of a wonderful community member and his son, the evening featured the most charming little ice cream corner. They set it up themselves and served every guest with such joy that it instantly became the sweetest moment of the night. Watching them work side by side, offering smiles and warmth to everyone who walked past, reminded us all of the simple power of kindness.

Seeing them with our founder, Prof Tissa Wijeratne, also reflected something truly special. His genuine connection with people goes far beyond medicine, and moments like this show how deeply he values community, compassion and the relationships built along the way.

It was a night full of celebration, but this small gesture touched every heart in the room. Community, generosity and the joy of giving… that is what makes evenings like this truly unforgettable✨

We are thrilled to share incredible news about our founder and ARCH President, Professor Tissa Wijeratne. He has once again been recognised as the Field Leader in Neurology Research by Australian Science Magazine!

This recognition is especially meaningful because it reflects not only his outstanding research impact but also his remarkable ability to balance a full-time clinical role as Director of Neurology and Stroke Medicine at Western Health. His capacity to lead a busy tertiary service while driving high quality research is a true testament to his dedication, resilience and unwavering commitment to improving brain health and stroke care.

Each year, only 250 field leaders are selected across all disciplines, and Professor Wijeratne’s repeated recognition celebrates his ongoing contributions to shaping the future direction of brain health, community engagement and preventive neurology.

Congratulations, Professor Wijeratne, on this well deserved and inspiring achievement. We are proud to celebrate your ongoing leadership and impact on the future of brain health✨

It is with great sadness that I join the global brain health and neurology community in mourning the passing of Professor Mark Hallett, a visionary leader, friend , mentor, and pioneer in movement disorders and neurophysiology.

I first came to know Professor Hallett through Professor Philip Thomson during my training at the Royal Adelaide Hospital more than twenty years ago. From those early days, his work and his gracious intellect left a profound impression on me—as they did on countless neurologists and researchers around the world.

Professor Hallett’s groundbreaking research fundamentally advanced our understanding of movement disorders and the neurophysiology of human motor control. As the former Editor-in-Chief of World Neurology , his contributions to the World Federation of Neurology and to global brain health were exceptional and enduring.

His vision, mentorship, and scientific legacy will continue to guide and inspire generations of clinicians and scientists. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him both personally and professionally.

My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues across the world.
