How would you spend 14,600 days of your life?

For Peter Haas, the answer was volunteering for the State Emergency Service. And not just in Karratha, but across WA.

Last night was our annual awards ceremony, where the service, achievements and dedication of several of our members were recognised. Although not everyone from the team could make the evening, they were definitely with us in spirit.

4️⃣0️⃣ Peter picked up his 40-year service award, marking his time spent helping people in road crashes, during cyclones, during flooding and many other rescue roles that the SES provides. An incredible commitment of time and effort.

3️⃣0️⃣ Also celebrated was Damien "Damo" Muller, totting up an equally impressive 30 years of SES service. As a trainer-assessor in many disciplines - especially vertical rescue - Damo has upskilled countless members over the years with his experience.

πŸ‘₯ The Member's Choice award was given to Rob Jefferson for his active, approachable and supportive membership over the last year, demonstrating genuine care for the wellbeing of others (and creating questionable social media content on here).

πŸ… Zac Hill - SES Young Person of The Year - added to his impressive awards haul this year, receiving the Local Manager's award for his dedication to Karratha SES over his relatively brief but hugely impactful time with us. Unfortunately Zac was unable to attend - something to do with getting beasted by RAAF officers - but thankfully his parents were with us and accepted the award on his behalf. It was wonderful to have them with us.

Finally, our Local Manager, Rob Graham, took the time to recognise the support and sacrifice that partners and family members of our crew make, in order for us to learn and train to ultimately help others in the community at times of crisis.

Nearly 4,000 hours of volunteering - equivalent of two full-time jobs done unpaid - was clocked up by our crew over the last 12 months which simply wouldn't be possible without the backing from our loved ones.

We thank them all for supporting us, so we can support you. 🧑

We have many, many things to say about this photo.

Firstly, look at all that BEAUTIFUL orange. Our membership has grown massively since we had many of these wonderful folks rock up to our stand at FeNaClNG, enticed by a talking teddy bear (🀷) and sign up to volunteer with us.

Secondly, it was standing room only last night as many of our newbies and ol...more experienced members were taken on a tour of the app we use to manage your Requests For Assistance, or RFAs for short.

Why now? Because believe it or not, we're nearly back into cyclone season πŸŒ€.

Thanks to all of you who've put out your excess garden waste for collection to begin your preparation. In the meantime, nights like this help us prepare to help you, should the worst happen.

We'll share more tips over the coming weeks but now will be a great time for you to continue your prep by revisiting your own cyclone plan if you have one, or to start creating one if you haven't: https://www.dfes.wa.gov.au/hazard-information/cyclone/prepare

Finally, we'd like to thank Jo for coming up to see us all 🧑

πŸ“Ί In this week's episode of How to Make Sure Your District Officer Can't Leave The Unit...

Our newest recruits were put through their Basic General Rescue and Urban Search and Rescue training this weekend.

It's a foundational course for all SES members that unlocks more specialists courses, covering the safe use of hand tools, putting up a ladder and search skills in case of building collapse.

It's also a test of the eight all-important knots that SES members are renowned for being able to do in their sleep...as our DO David Cowdell can attest.

Wrapping up a casualty / friendly local District Officer in a basket stretcher is a skill itself and we're pleased to report all members passed with flying colours.

On a completely unrelated note, if anyone can drop some food and water off to the unit and could maybe create some sort of straw/conveyor belt contraption to feed a DFES employee we'd be most grateful. You may have to let yourself in though as Dave's a little tied up right now. 🧑

πŸ”₯ Would you like a side order of burns and smoke-inhalation with your burger, Sir?

Monday night saw ABSOLUTE SCENES behind our unit which was transformed (for training purposes) into the Q Cafe and a street scene that had suffered a rather unfortunate explosion.

With casualties aplenty, our team sprang into action to help triage and provide first aid, before handing over to the medics. It was a great opportunity to test out our relatively new Basic Life Support kit including oxygen therapy, catastrophic bleeds kit and airway support.

For some members and one of our Karratha Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service brethren - who had literally completed the Provide Basic Life Support course the previous day - it was a chance to put their new-found knowledge into action.

You’ll note we train with moulage; the smoky make-up and fake wounds and injuries to make it look realistic for all involved.

Thankfully our casualties lived to tell the tale but we’re not sure that the Google reviews for the Q Cafe are going to be too favourable 😬.

Big thanks to Jo and Alex for putting us through our paces and to all our volunteers for getting stuck in. 🧑

🎨 We need to talk colours again.

Nope, not the Australian Warning System (although, given cyclone season is just around the corner, now would be a good time to familiarise yourself...)

What we're actually referring to is that simple question which can be life changing.

🟑 R U OK? 🟑

There's plenty going around social media about this today but we're acutely aware that the nature of what we do means we come into regular contact with people who've been through trauma. It's the same for our members too.

So if there's someone in your life who you haven't spoken to for a while, who you know may have had it tough in the past, today's a great reminder to get off of Facebook and get in touch with them again.

You know how to start that conversation. Let's make sure we all have it. πŸ’›

πŸ† Remember a while back we mentioned that we'd been nominated for an award for the support for our colleagues in Exmouth State Emergency Service and the North West Cape community during Cyclone Narelle earlier this year?

Well, tonight's the night of the WAFES awards down in Perth and some of our crew are here representing. Sadly not all members involved could be here but we're definitely thinking about you tonight!

We're also celebrating the fantastic achievements of our former member Zac Hill, the winner of the State Emergency Service Young Person of the Year Award.

Sadly he can't be with us tonight either as he's dedicating his time to his new role in the air force but he's definitely here with us in spirit.

Whatever the result, it's fantastic to be here with the Exmouth crew and other emergency services colleagues.

πŸ› οΈ We wanted to keep this quiet, but as you know, Karratha's a small town and word spreads fast.

It's official. We're opening up a new panel and body shop. The tools may be a tad...medieval but we reckon the results speak for themselves and business is already booming as you can see.

Okay, maybe we won't win any awards for our craftsmanship but that's because they're actually the end product of a recent Road Crash Rescue course held with our neighbours at Nickol Bay Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade and Karratha Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service.

The good news? We now have an extra three SES volunteers who've completed their training. Once their Basic Life Support course is complete, they'll be able to join the rest of our RCR crew and hit the road, day or night, 24/7. ⛑️

On a serious note, this particular skill is unfortunately one that were most likely to put into practice more often than not, so hopefully it brings you peace of mind that we have more people in town qualified to help out at the worst of times.

Congrats to Brad, Rob and Joe from our unit, along with the rest of the Pilbara-based VFRS and BFB crews who qualified last weekend.
