💙 Change Can Be Challenging, But Change Can Also Be Positive 💙

At SAFE, every decision we make is guided by one question:

How do we ensure we can continue helping animals not just today, but for many years to come?

Sustainability is not about doing what is easiest. It is about doing what is necessary to build an organisation that can continue saving lives long after the current volunteers, foster carers, coordinators, managers and board members have moved on.

SAFE has been helping animals for decades because passionate people before us were willing to make difficult decisions that strengthened the organisation for the future. Today, we have the same responsibility to those who will come after us.

Change can feel uncomfortable. It can raise questions and create uncertainty. But standing still is not always the safest option. Sometimes growth requires us to adapt, improve our systems, strengthen our governance, and ensure that every dollar, every volunteer hour and every resource is used as effectively as possible for the animals in our care.

Our commitment remains unchanged.

🐾 Saving companion animals from unnecessary euthanasia.
🐾 Supporting foster carers and volunteers.
🐾 Finding suitable homes for animals in need.
🐾 Building a sustainable future for animal welfare in Western Australia.

The faces involved may change over time. Processes may evolve. New ideas may be introduced. But our purpose remains the same.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support SAFE, whether you volunteer, foster, adopt, donate, transport animals, fundraise, advocate, or simply share our posts. Together, we are building something that will continue making a difference for animals long into the future.

Because our focus is not just on today.

It is on ensuring Our Future is SAFE. 💙

🐾 We're just over one-third of the way there... but with only 9 days left until EOFY, we still have a long way to go.

Every day, SAFE volunteers work tirelessly to save animals that have nowhere else to go. From emergency veterinary treatment and foster care to transport, microchipping and desexing, every dollar donated helps give vulnerable cats and dogs a second chance.

As a foster-based rescue, we don't have shelters or government funding. We rely on the generosity of our community to continue saving more than 4,000 animals each year across Western Australia.

If you've been thinking about making a donation before the end of the financial year, now is the time. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps us continue our lifesaving work.

Together, we can ensure more animals get the care, safety and opportunities they deserve.

As part of National Volunteer Week (May 18–24), we’re celebrating the incredible volunteers across CANA member organisations who make a difference for people and pets in their communities. 💙

Today, we’re recognising Carli Corry, a dedicated volunteer with SAFE Inc in WA.

Behind the scenes, Carli has played a key role in transforming SAFE’s previously cluttered shed, office and store room into clean, organised spaces that are easier for volunteers and foster carers to navigate.

Her work has helped create clearer visibility of available supplies, improve stock management and strengthen accountability across the team.

Carli has also led volunteer day groups, bringing people together to contribute to these changes and helping ensure the spaces remain practical, organised and sustainable for ongoing use.

“Volunteering with SAFE has given me a real sense of purpose. For me, it’s about creating spaces and systems that make it easier for everyone to do what they do best — caring for animals. When things are organised and running smoothly, it supports both the people and the animals, and that flow makes a big difference,” she said.

Thank you, Carli, for the care, energy and organisation you bring to SAFE and for embodying this year’s National Volunteer Week theme, Your Year to Volunteer. 🐾

Today, we pause to remember and honour the courage, sacrifice and resilience of all those who have served, and continue to serve.

On Anzac Day, we reflect not only on the people who stood together in the face of adversity, but also on the animals who served beside them. From loyal dogs to brave horses, these animals gave comfort, companionship and support when it was needed most.

At SAFE, we see that same bond every day. The connection between people and animals is powerful. It brings strength, healing and hope, even in the most difficult times.

Today, we remember them all.

Lest we forget.

Sometimes a project comes along that feels truly guided 💚

Clare Andersen was “called” to create The Greenbloods, an incredible publication bringing together inspiring stories from a wide range of people who have connected with nature in deeply meaningful ways. At the heart of these stories is transformation, and the many ways people reconnect with the world around them.
From explorers and divers to artists, horticulturists and those passionate about plants and animals, this book represents so many beautiful perspectives and lived experiences.

It is also very special to see connections so close to SAFE within its pages. Acclaimed author Melody Horrill shares her powerful story, including her bond with a wild injured dolphin, also told in her book A Dolphin Called Jock. Melody has also been part of sharing the human animal bond through her work, something we see every day within SAFE.

One of our own, Sue Lennard, has also contributed, sharing her story of community gardening and her passion for reconnecting people to land, food and each other. This is such a beautiful reflection of what SAFE stands for beyond just rescuing animals, it is about connection, community and care.

I have also felt incredibly grateful to be included and to have the opportunity to share some of SAFE’s messages with a wider audience. There is something very powerful in the idea that when there is a genuine need for positive change, the right people come together to make that happen.

Clare has brought this project to life with such dedication, weaving together stories filled with inspiration, love and a deep respect for our planet and all living beings.
If you feel drawn to reconnect, this is a beautiful and meaningful read.
