Wisdom Wombat Refuge

Wisdom Wombat Refuge Based in Kangaroo Valley NSW, The Wisdom Wombat Refuge is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to rescuing orphaned joey wombats and injured wombats.

The wombat is one of Australia's most iconic and oldest native marsupials and are protected in every state except Victoria. As such the protection of wombats around Australia is essential to their existence. Founded in 2010 by Lyn and Paul Obern, The Wisdom Wombat Refuge is dedicated to rescuing not just orphaned joey wombats but also sub-adults and adults that are in need of medical care, whether

it be from accident, injury or mange. Lyn's focus on providing essential routine care to the wombats over the past 5 years has led to the release of around 15 healthy wombats into the wild thus far. At present Lyn has over 16 wombats in her care, all at different stages of development and rehabilitation, which are cared for by Lyn and Paul at their property in Kangaroo Valley NSW, using their own funds for the housing, feeding and vet bills of these rescued and often injured wombats. Each wombat takes between 18 months - 2 years of constant care before being old enough to be released, making the wombat the longest marsupial to remain with their mothers in the wild and therefore to rehabilitate whilst in care. As an avid member of the Wombat Protection Society of Australia and Wildlife Rescue South Coast, Lyn is passionate about providing appropriate care to wombats, and is fully licenced under NSW Parks and Wildlife for the care and release of wombats. Lyn is the regional wombat co ordinator for Kangaroo Valley and the Southern Highlands within Wildlife Rescue South Coast, and accepts all wombats initially that come into care in these areas, for assessment, treatment, and sometimes distribution to the small network of licensed wombat carers within this group, or other wildlife groups she works alongside if her facility is full to capacity at the time of admission.

This short video ( turn up the sound) was sent to me from a custodian that cares for Sunny and Luna that we released on their fantastic property two years ago where both have thrived. Sunny has now a beautiful Joey. This great video was taken a few days ago, it shows exactly how Joey is left safe in the burrow whilst mum goes out to forage grass at night. On her return you can see clearly the Joey does not appear until mum wombat chuffs to her Joey at the entrance letting it know it’s her and it’s safe to come out. This is the same vocal I used to comfort Gus in his capture and afterwards to make him feel he was safe. Enjoy. Thanks to the Custodians for being such amazing people and the care they continue to monitor for Sunny and Lunar. ♥️♥️♥️

Meet Gus, a 5 kg Joey spotted alone after his mum was hit by a car. He was living in their burrow, a large burrow, but with relentless rain for the week after orphaned, he was seen out early morning trying to eat sodden grass. After a week of evasion from capture, I was called by a member of public to say he was outside of his burrow eating grass. I jumped in the car with a large net and crate, and arrived to see him exactly where spotted, sitting above the large burrow entrance. I decided to quietly wombat chuff to him as his mum would do on her arrival back to her burrow where he would be waiting for her. He stopped eating and slowly came to the top of the burrow and listened to me. I kept wombat talking softly to him, he came closer allowing me to pop my net over him without frightening him. He immediately accepted me as a surrogate mum as I kept wombat chatting to reassure him he was safe. He settled into feeding from a bottle and following me about the house within days, just like he would with his real mum. Gus is a gentle calm little Joey and has gained weight and settled into care fast, a great outcome. He is now with a buddy to cuddle up with and play, with Native wildlife rescue, run by a close colleague that works alongside WWR.
