An update from Trees for Life -

Uncertainty affects us all and, during challenging times, reconnecting through positive action can be especially powerful. Spending time outdoors, immersed in nature and alongside others who care, supports our wellbeing and helps us feel more connected to the places close to home.

Great news! ❤️👏

A colony of South Australia's last remaining bandicoot species is bouncing back just 6 kilometres from Adelaide amid hopes they can be connected with other populations.

An endangered southern brown bandicoot was first spotted in Brownhill Creek Recreation Park about six years ago, prompting Conservation Volunteers Australia to erect cameras to count them.

That resulted in the construction of a grazing enclosure led by the Friends of Brownhill Creek, inside which blackberry bushes and weeds were removed and native plants allowed to grow without being grazed by kangaroos and feral deer.

Here are a few ‘unusual’ shots of our local Southern Brown Bandicoots.
Some good photos for identification showing how very distinguishable they are from a common rat.
Their colouring and shiny fur, their round rump, their long snout and short tail.
Though In one photo the subject has just been over for a drink and on return, sitting up on its rear legs looks a bit like a drowned rat 😂. Check out their feet and toes. Front feet have sharp toes perfect for digging up insects, grubs and underground fungi.

It was a lovely day at the Kangarilla Community Day on Sunday, 15th March. Hope you visited the oval and came to see us.

Some more cute shots of bandicoots in Kangarilla.
In WA they call bandicoots by there aboriginal name Quenda ( kwenda). In SA I believe the Kaurna people call them B**g or Marti. I just have to work out if our visiting coots are Marti’s or Martina’s 😂 😂

Thanks heaps to the KLG volunteers who helped with transplanting and thinning seedlings this morning.
A labourious task made enjoyable when done in good company.

And look who turned up in the fernery once you all left!
Mr Southern Brown Bandicoot. Im presuming he is male as he is quite large. I admit I did bribe him out for this photo.
