Grenfell Endemic Garden.
Grenfell is an easy 1hr45m drive from Junee in the Weddin Shire. They have a long standing and active Landcare network as well as a community nursery, which has resulted in some excellent local projects and outcomes over many years.
We took a drive there on the weekend to pick up their ‘Weddin Wattles’ book and visit the Endemic Garden, not realising it was the weekend of their annual Henry Lawson Festival. Also scored a free wattle with the book.
There were ‘literally’ thousands of people there and a great vibe with the Main Street closed off for the event.
Unfortunately the nursery wasn’t open but we’ll be returning soon to check that out.
The endemic garden is a short but very informative walk on O’Briens Hill with good parking and amenities just off the main road, wheelchair friendly.
It features many of the areas local plants, numbered and listed on description plaques.
A number of those plants are common to our area but there also some unique species which only occur around Grenfell, such as the Brundah Mint Bush.
Some of the Wattles which are common to the area are locally rare in Junee Shire now. Ploughshare and Bent Leaf Wattle are two examples.
As our group is in the process of developing a nursery it will be interesting to visit their nursery to see how they get things done. We may discuss this at our next meeting to do this as a group event.
A well serviced town and with Weddin National park bush walking opportunities a few minutes out the road the area is well worth a visit.
