I arrived back in Brisbane at the weekend, having been away in Tasmania for nearly 18 months. I've been working for the Tassie Government & spending some of my spare time fighting fires & attending car crashes as a volunteer firefighter (photo), as well as catching some nice snakes! I'm starting to get a few calls coming in now, but have to wait for my snake catching licence to come through from the Queensland Government. I'm having to decline calls until I get that, but really looking forward to getting up & running soon & back handling those snakes! 🐍

It's been a while! After relocating from Queensland to Tasmania in autumn/winter, I've not had any snake catches, it's been too cold! Today I got a call for a lowland copperhead at a property, which turned out to be a stunning tiger snake. My first tiger snake & first snake catch in Tassie & it was a stunning snake. You can see by the down jacket, it wasn't that warm, it started chucking it down with cold rain & I was soaked through. Slightly different to Queensland! Reel to follow 🎬🐍

It's been a while since I posted. Now I'm living in Tasmania & it's winter, there aren't many snakes about. I was out today to a rural property after the owner lifted a metal panel off the ground & found a tiger snake coiled up under it. The snake didn't move & he put the panel back down. When I searched for it, the snake had gone, just a round indent where it had been. There were quite a few of these panels laying around, so I checked them all & found nothing. Snakes love getting under metal panels that have been left on the ground, like corrugated iron, colourbond fence panels etc. It's best to stack them on a couple of sleepers, so they're off the ground. It provides less shelter for snakes & you can easily check underneath for unwelcome visitors. You'll see in the video, I use a crowbar to lift the panel. It's not a good idea to put your fingers under a panel to lift it, if a snake does happen to be near where your fingers are, you could end up with a bite 🐍

Snakes of Tasmania - the tiger snake 🐍

I love this paragraph from the article describing snakes' behaviour: 'LIKE MOST SNAKES, TIGER SNAKES ARE FIRST COWARDS, then bluffers, and only become warriors as a last resort. If threatened, a Tiger snake will flatten out its neck, raising its head to make itself appear as frightening as possible. If the threat persists, the snake will often feign a strike, producing an explosive hiss or 'bark' at the same time. Like most snakes, Tiger snakes will not bite unless provoked."

Generally the belly is pale yellow, white or grey, the enlarged ventral scales often edged with black. The head is broad and blunt.

I've now moved to Richmond in Tasmania & am just applying to the Tasmanian Government for my snake catching licence, then I can start catching & relocating again. Only 3 types of snake here & all venomous! For people in Tasmania looking at my page, you'll see the different snakes that I have caught & relocated in Queensland. By far the most common snake that I relocated was the coastal carpet python, which is also my favourite snake, especially the really big ones! 🐍

It's both a sad & a happy day for me. After living in Jindalee for over 7 years, I'm moving. I'll be moving in with my partner & we're moving to Tasmania at the same time. So, I've caught & relocated my last snake in Queensland, which was a very chilled coastal carpet python. I'll be registering with the Tasmanian Government as a snake catcher, so I'll be keeping the Facebook & Instagram page going. Tasmania only has 3 species of snake: tiger snake, lowland copperhead & white-lipped snake, all venomous! 🐍

There are three species of snakes found in Tasmania: Tiger, Lowland Copperhead and White-lipped.

Spent the morning requalifying on the CPR element of my first aid certificate. All done for another year. Next year I have to do the full course again. It lasts 3 years, as long as I renew the CPR every year to keep it current. It's also a requirement of being a licenced snake catcher 🤕🐍
