I expect the total number of koalas in Australia to go up, as new populations are found and existing populations have more effort put in counting & estimating their numbers. If as I expect, the total number of koalas is a bigger number, it is not a cause for celebration. It is the downward trajectory of koala populations that is the problem, caused by habitat destruction & fragmentation. While many koala populations are in decline, there are some that are growing in number. But if we do not protect large forests areas for koalas, we will tip the growing populations into decline too. My understanding is that once a koala population has been tipped into decline by habitat destruction & fragmentation, no human mitigations have been able to stop the decline.
