Today, we remember the 5,500 Australian military personnel who contributed to the 22-nation INTERFET force deployed to restore peace in East Timor (Timor Leste).

The first Australians from INTERFET arrived in Dili on 20 September 1999 to distressing scenes. They quickly secured Dili before moving out to other areas, disarming the militia, protecting convoys carrying aid workers, providing medical assistance and making sure supplies got to the East Timorese people.

INTERFET completed its mission in February 2000 and handed over command to the United Nations.

Between 1999 and 2013, Australia was involved in 4 United Nations-sanctioned operations (INTERFET, UNTAET, UNMISET, UNOTIL) and the International Stabilisation Force (ISF). Six Australians died during peace operations in East Timor. Lest we forget.

On this day in 1990, Operation Desert Shield commenced. A coalition of 35 nations responding to the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq.

Over 1800 Australian Defence Force personnel served in Desert Shield which transitioned into Operation Desert Storm in February 1991 now commonly known as Gulf War 1

Australia’s initial contribution to this operation were the frigates HMAS Adelaide and HMAS Darwin along with the supply ship HMAS Success plus 2 surgical teams of 10 who joined the ships company of the US hospital ship USNS Comfort. The Australian Army’s 16th Air Defence Regiment sent members to serve on HMAS Success

Later HMAS Westralia, HMAS Sydney and HMAS Brisbane replaced the initial 3 ships

Fewer than 200 coalition personnel died in the conflict with no Australian casualties.

We will remember them.
