Happy Birthday to the Royal Australian Navy and Australian Army!

After the Federation of Australia came into existence on the 1st of January 1901, one of the first acts of the Commonwealth Government was to create the Department of Defence, which came into being on the 1st of March 1901. Today, we thank all current and former serving members of the Navy and Army for defending and serving our nation at home and abroad.

On February 20, 1942, the 2/40th Infantry Battalion as part of Sparrow Force, stood their ground at Koepang as the Japanese invasion of Timor began.

The 2/40th Infantry Battalion, almost entirely from Tasmania, were known for their resilience and determination, and played a significant role in the resistance, fighting alongside Dutch troops.

They fought a spirited defence, inflicting heavy Japanese casualties. After four days of intense fighting, Sparrow Force surrendered due to Japanese air superiority and armoured support as well as a lack of ammunition and food.

84 men were killed and 132 badly injured. Tragically more than twice the number of those killed in battle died as prisoners of war.

Today, we remember the sacrifices of the 2/40th and all those who served in the Battle of Timor. Their courage and dedication will never be forgotten. Lest we forget.

83 years ago today, war reached our shores.

Over 240 Japanese fighters and bombers descended upon Darwin and left havoc in their wake.

In the words of Australian Prime Minister John Curtin, Darwin had been bombed, “but not conquered.”

Two anti-aircraft gunners embodied the collective spirit of resilience on display that day.

Gunner Wilbert Hudson and Lance Bombardier Frederick Wombley engaged Japanese aircraft strafing their positions in defence of Darwin.

Both men were awarded the Military Medal for their actions and became the first Australians to earn bravery awards in a battle on Australian soil.

Today we remember all who fought to defend Australia’s Top End, and all who served our nation during the Second World War.

Lest we forget.
