💚 Happy 50th birthday, Arafmi!

Fifty years ago, Arafmi started with volunteers handing out their own phone numbers so other carers had someone to call. Today, they support mental health carers right across Queensland.

Last week our CEO Scott joined Arafmi Ltd at Parliament House in Brisbane to celebrate mental health carers and kick off their 50th year. Thank you for having us!

We’ve worked alongside Arafmi for many years, including on important research at the Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research to better understand the needs of First Nations mental health carers in our region. We’re so grateful for everything Arafmi does for carers.

Some of the best care comes from people who have sat in the chair themselves.

Karlee Excell was diagnosed with breast cancer at 21, while studying nursing. The oncology nurses who cared for her changed her career path.

“They knew their patients, laughed with them and knew the practical things that actually helped.”

Today, Karlee is Nurse Unit Manager of the Oncology Day Unit at Ipswich Hospital. At West Moreton Health Foundation’s Go Pink launch breakfast, she shared her story and what community support means on the ground: modern equipment, care closer to home and the small comforts that make a hard day easier.

Last week we joined West Moreton Health staff, researchers and partners at the Research and Innovation Symposium: Transforming Healthcare, and we were proud to be a sponsor again this year.

It was a full day of research, quality improvement and clinical innovation, covering everything from emergency care for critical bleeding to rural wound care and palliative care outreach. Many of the presenters were sharing their work for the first time.

Our CEO Scott Young presented awards throughout the day, and a big thank you to our corporate partner NAB Riverlink for sponsoring the awards with us. Congratulations to all of this year’s award recipients.

Our Go Pink stall was there for the day too, so thank you to everyone who stopped by for a chat, a scrunchie or a raffle ticket 💗

Thank you to the BESIX Watpac team 💙

While building the Ipswich Hospital Expansion, the BESIX Watpac team and their delivery partners held a golf day and raised more than $40,000 for patients at Ipswich Hospital.

Their gift funded two handheld ultrasound devices for the hospital’s podiatry service, the first use of this technology in a Queensland public hospital. The devices help clinicians check patients with diabetes and poor circulation in their legs and feet sooner, so problems can be diagnosed and treated earlier.

It also funded a portable ultrasound for the renal clinic, so clinicians can check dialysis patients on the spot and pick up problems earlier, helping them avoid unnecessary hospital stays and transfers. And a new blanket warming cabinet keeps day surgery patients warm and comfortable before their operations.

On 8 October, Assistant Minister to the Premier Dr Christian Rowan MP, representing Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Tim Nicholls, joined BESIX Watpac CEO Mark Baker, West Moreton Health Board Chair Sue Scheinpflug and our CEO Scott Young to see the new equipment in action.

It’s a great example of what’s possible when industry partners invest in the communities they work in. Thank you to everyone who teed off to make it happen.

This morning we launched Go Pink 2026 with our breakfast at CSI, and it was so great to see a room full of pink 💗

We heard from guest speaker Karlee Excell, Nurse Unit Manager of the Oncology Day Unit at Ipswich Hospital, who shared her own experience of breast cancer. Thank you, Karlee, for telling your story so openly. Our CEO, Scott Young, and Hannah Bloch, Chief Executive of West Moreton Health, also spoke about what our community's giving has made possible, from much-needed equipment to improved care in our hospitals.

Thank you to our special guests for joining us: Wendy Bourne MP, Jennifer Howard MP, Mayor Teresa Harding, David Martin: Ipswich, Cr Michael Hagan, Cr Julie Reck and Cheryl Steinhardt - Councillor LVRC. And also to the members of the West Moreton Health board and our own board for coming along.

Thanks once again to CSI - Club Services Ipswich for hosting us for another year, and for your ongoing partnership. And to our corporate partners, MIACOR IT and Kalbar Sunflowers, thank you for being part of today and for backing so much of what we do throughout the year.

Thank you for popping in to our pop-ups 🤗🩷

Over the past two weeks, we've loved heading out to Esk, Laidley, Gatton, Boonah, Ripley and Ipswich with our little Go Pink stall. It's become one of our favourite parts of the lead-up to October.

We had the best time catching up with familiar faces, meeting new ones and chatting with staff, patients and visitors along the way. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello, try on a shirt or pick out a pair of earrings. Every single purchase really adds up.

Everything raised stays right here in our region, going towards breast cancer care for local patients and the West Moreton Health staff who care for them. We can't wait to see our hospitals turn pink again this October 🎀
