Kambu Health is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Controlled Health Service. Be Respectful:

In addition to providing primary health care services, Kambu Health has general, allied and specialist clinics running regular nutrition, immunisation, antenatal, baby, chronic disease management, counselling, optometry, podiatry and hearing programs. Regular workshops are also held locally for issues including stress management, tobacco, men’s health, women’s health, nutrition and life skills. Afterschool Culture & Play Playgroup

Kambu Health Ipswich Children and Family Centre (CFC) is excited to welcome Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Jarjums aged 3-8 years and their families to our Afterschool Culture & Play Playgroup.

This playgroup is all about celebrating who our Jarjums are, where they come from and the connections that make them who they are. Together, we explore identity, family, culture, language, dance and connection to Country through fun, meaningful and engaging activities.

What will we explore this term?
Our learning focuses include:
🪃 Who Am I? – Belonging & Family
🦘 What Is Around Us? – Animals & Sound
🌿 Connection to Country – Bush Tucker
🎉 Community & Celebration

Through play, creative activities, music and dance, Jarjums will have opportunities to learn, share and strengthen their connections to culture, community and one another.

At the end of the term 4, CFC will host a Celebration of Learning, where we hope our Jarjums and families can come together to share and celebrate everything they have learnt throughout the term.

Designed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children aged 0–8 years, Our Backpack Library Program makes early literacy fun, interactive and easy to enjoy at home

Art Group at Family Wellbeing Service

If you’ve ever come along to Art Group at Family Wellbeing Service in Laidley, you probably would have met Uncle Jo and Uncle Craig.

Uncle Jo and Uncle Craig join us for Art Group every week without fail. They are working on a beautiful Rainbow Serpent that will bring together all of the hands on our massive community piece. This community piece celebrates 50 Years of Kambu Health and features a handprint from every visitor at Family Wellbeing Service over the month of July.

We can’t wait to showcase the finished piece!

If you like to paint, weave, make jewellery, or just yarn and have a feed, join us at Family Wellbeing Service in Laidley every Wednesday from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Let’s yarn about bowel cancer

Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the risk increases as you get older.

But the good news is that 90% of bowel cancers can be successfully treated if found early.

The National Bowel Cancer Screening Program allows people to complete a free bowel cancer screening test every 2 years once you turn 45. These tests can be done at home, simplifying bowel cancer testing.

Because bowel cancer can develop without any symptoms, it’s important to do your screening to help with early detection and prevention.

There are two ways to participate in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program:
Complete the test at home. If your address is up to date with Medicare you will receive your free kit in the mail every 2 years. Your kit will be sent to the address registered with Medicare.
If you haven’t received your kit or have concerns about doing a bowel cancer screening test, talk to your health professional.

NAIDOC Ripley

Our Social Health team had a great day at NAIDOC Ripley on 1 October, hosted by West Moreton Hospital and Health Service!

It was great to get out and about, catch up with Mob, have a yarn with community, and connect with our partners and other services across the region. 🖤💛❤️

We had the opportunity to share more about our services, what we can offer and how we support Mob, while also hearing from community and strengthening connections with the services working alongside our people.

We also heard about the new Health Equity Strategy and had the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing work in this space, sharing our knowledge and experiences about how we can continue to improve access, support and outcomes for Mob.

Days like this are a great reminder that supporting community is about relationships, connection and working together. It’s about knowing what each of us can bring to the table and making sure Mob know what supports are available when they need them.

A big thank you to West Moreton Hospital and Health Service for hosting the day and bringing everyone together. We loved catching up with Mob, having a yarn and being part of such a great community day.

When Mob, community and services come together, we can all play our part in building stronger, healthier communities.
