🌳 Chinese Elm: A Bushcare Enemy We Can’t Ignore 🌳

Chinese Elm is a well-known problem species in bushcare. It spreads fast, invades relentlessly, and if left unchecked will quickly dominate bushland sites, shading out native plants and undoing years of hard work. It demands constant attention.

We’re fortunate to be working closely with Brisbane City Council, tackling the big stuff head-on. Removing large Chinese Elms is costly and complex, but thanks to generous BCC grants, we’ve been able to engage professional arborists to handle the heavy work. The volunteer bushcare teams then follow up by removing the endless wave of seedlings and saplings.

But here’s the blunt truth: this isn’t just a bushcare problem — it’s a backyard one too. Cockatoos love the seed and spread it far and wide. If you’ve got a Chinese Elm hiding in your garden, it’s almost certainly seeding into nearby bushland.

✔ Check your garden
✔ Remove young trees early - they often just pull out!
✔ Consider removing mature trees before they become a serious problem

Every tree removed upstream saves hundreds more from popping up downstream. Let’s stop the spread at the source. 💪🌿

You do directly and can choose to do any of these at your own pace: plant a tree, weeding, watering, mulching or simply offering moral support.
How does this = council spending and supporting nature more?
Your logged hours can and will be treated similar to a petition calling on the council to act. Having strong local community support for the environment does protect nature.
