ADVICE - An operational issue at the Port Fairy Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant has resulted in the temporary discharge of dirty-coloured water to the ocean.

As a result, coloured organic material has been released into the ocean mixing zone off Griffith Island.

We’re sorry, and we want to reassure people that no raw sewage has been discharged into the ocean.

We’re using drones to monitor the area and take samples. At this stage the impact is small and is not affecting nearby beaches or surf spots.

We’ll keep you updated via Facebook and our website as more information becomes available.

With increasing concerns around algal blooms and the role nutrient plays, these reports are a timely reminder of the 192 point sources of high nutrient discharges around Australia from Australia's coastal outfalls:

We are pleased happy to release the National Outfall Database (NOD) reports for 2022-23 and 2023-24 with nutrient rankings for Australian outfalls. Now in its 10th year this project provides the community and researchers with valuable time series data on Australia’s coastal outfalls and is produced for the NESP Marine and Coastal Hub
Although nutrient is certainly not the only pollutant of concern discharged from Australia’s 192 coastal outfalls it often is prescribed in publicly available in most EPA licenses. This makes it more readily accessible and provides researchers and the community with a uniquely independent window into the less attractive side of the water sector.
The complete datasets are available at nod.org.au or Open Access to Ocean Data – AODN Portal
Thanks to all relevant authorities assisting the NOD team in producing these datasets and a VERY BIG THANKS to the NOD Team including the inspiring Dr Katherine Warwick!

There is no end in sight to the pollution caused by a ‘broken’ system. Experts say it could even be getting worse

What a laugh glad we don't have self regulation of polluters in Australia....

How disgusting? Sydney Water have dropped the ball again!

Debris balls have washed up along Sydney beaches after a few days of heavy rainfall. These debris balls washed up along Sydney's Malabar beach, near one of the "DIRTY THREE" deep ocean outfalls. This comes after a recent investigation by the EPA identified a massive 30 cubic meter fatberg was the likely cause of these poo balls across Sydney.

This giant fatberg is comprised of fats, oils and grease and has clogged up the section of piping close to the main bulkhead door.

When nutrients accumulate occur in the wrong place at the wrong time bad things can happen to our ocean. On the heels of the SA algal bloom Tasmania now has another type of algal bloom. Are we doing all we should to manage this risk???
Nutrients – wrong place, wrong time cause Algal Blooms
