Inverell Shire Council has agreed to contribute to the installation of a shade structure over the childrenโ€™s playground equipment at Lions Park in response to community advocacy about limited shade during the warmer months.

The project has been put forward by the Inverell Lions Club, which has advised that numerous requests have been received from members of the public for improved shade coverage within the playground area. Council will accept the Clubโ€™s contribution of $5,000 towards the project, with the remaining $27,863.50 to be funded by Council.

The estimated total project cost is $32,863.50. It has been noted that the installation of a commercial shade structure will improve comfort and protection from ultraviolet radiation, increase the usability of the playground during summer, enhance community amenity at Lions Park and support family-friendly recreational infrastructure.

The Lions Club has also indicated a willingness to provide volunteer labour assistance where appropriate. To ensure the overall shade cover is effective, it will also be necessary to modify the height of an existing hard cover above a platform in the play area. Council staff have assessed the proposed modification and are satisfied it can be completed without compromising the safety or integrity of the existing structure.

The contribution from the Inverell Lions Club has been recognised as a valued and longstanding commitment to improving Lions Park for the enjoyment of local families and visitors.

Mayor Kate Dight said โ€œthe project is a positive example of Council and community organisations working together to improve local facilitiesโ€.

The Mayor stated, โ€œThis project will make Lions Park more comfortable and enjoyable for children and families, particularly during the hotter months. Council appreciates the contribution of the Inverell Lions Club and its ongoing commitment to enhancing this much-loved community space.โ€

I would like to thank Phillip & Tom for looking after the Sapphire City Markets in my absence today.
I have been laid up with the flu & didn't want to spread it around.
Hopefully I will be back to annoy you all on the 7th June.
