Inverell Shire Council is pleased to report the successful delivery of the Swimming NSW (SNSW) Country Regional Championships, held at the Inverell Aquatic Centre on 17–18 January 2026. The event brought hundreds of competitors, families and officials to the region and showcased Inverell’s capacity to host high‑quality sporting events.

A total of 275 swimmers competed across the two‑day championship, representing 44 clubs from NSW and four clubs from Queensland. Inverell Swimming Club fielded 15 local competitors, aged between 8 and 19 years.

Local swimmers achieved notable results, including:
• Matilda Andrews — Silver and bronze medals in breaststroke events
• Louis Wait — Bronze medal in the 100m butterfly

Belgravia Leisure’s Aquatic Centre Manager, Victoria Plain, confirmed that 706 spectator passes were sold across the weekend, with strong attendance.

SNSW officials, including President Mr Graeme Field, praised the venue, event organisation and staff performance. Technical Officials were provided exclusive use of the multipurpose room, offering a private space with amenities, an arrangement that was highly valued.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service (WRHS) were in attendance with its BBQ trailer, reporting a highly successful fundraising weekend. The organisation expressed interest in supporting future events.

Feedback from swimmers, highlighted the quality of the water, starting blocks and overall event management, valuable insights from athletes who regularly compete across NSW.

Following the success of the championships, Inverell Swimming Club and Belgravia Leisure will apply to host the Short Course Area Championships in August 2026, expected to attract 100–125 competitors and their families.

Tourism Research Australia data indicates that sports tourists spend an average of $412 per person per day, with each competitor typically accompanied by 2.3 supporters. Based on this model, the event generated an estimated $786,920 in direct economic benefit for the Inverell region.

The SNSW Country Regional Championships have been deemed a resounding success, providing an excellent opportunity to highlight the Inverell Aquatic Centre’s capabilities to swimmers, families and the state’s peak swimming body. Council acknowledges the efforts of all partners, volunteers and staff who contributed to delivering a high‑quality event for the community and visitors alike.
