Some plant combinations bring in the insects every garden needs.
The right pairings turn flowers into landing pads for pollinators and pest hunters.

- Squash & Borage — borage's blue blooms are magnets for bees that pollinate squash flowers
- Tomatoes & Sweet Alyssum — tiny alyssum flowers attract hoverflies whose larvae devour aphids
- Cucumbers & Dill — dill umbels draw parasitic wasps that protect vines from caterpillars
- Peppers & Yarrow — yarrow brings ladybugs that patrol pepper leaves for soft-bodied pests
- Beans & Cosmos — native bees feeding on cosmos improve bean pod set significantly
- Cabbage & Fennel — fennel's airy flowers host tiny wasps that attack cabbage caterpillars
- Zucchini & Calendula — bees move freely between calendula and zucchini blooms all morning
- Eggplant & Lavender — pollinators linger near lavender and visit eggplant flowers more often
- Strawberries & Phacelia — ground beetles sheltering under phacelia reduce slug damage nearby

• Crushed eggshells add calcium for fruiting plants
• Diluted milk strengthens squash, cucumbers, and peas
• Wood ash provides potassium and raises pH for root crops
• Each plant benefits most from a specific nutrient boost
• Simple kitchen scraps = stronger, healthier harvests

Making your own seed-raising mix is easy to do – you only need four simple ingredients – and the results are so worth it.

Ready to learn this great fundamental skill of edible gardening? 🌱

On the Milkwood blog today, we're sharing our *best-ever* seed raising mix recipe - one we’ve experimented with and refined over many years.

The recipe we've landed on uses the lowest footprint and most locally available materials we can find.

And, by making your own, you get to side-step the plastic bags that store-bought seed-raising mix usually comes wrapped in. Good stuff.

Here's the full how-to and recipe (which is also inside our , if you happen to have a copy and prefer to read things on paper 📖):

Let us know if you've made this one before? We love seeing all your photos.
