🌳What a fantastic couple of days in the Daintree. New technology is transforming the way we detect and count wildlife populations. This week, 12 Indigenous Ranger groups partnering with us to monitor Spectacled Flying‑foxes came together at the for knowledge sharing and collaboration.

These groups are already building strong drone skills, and this interactive workshop — co‑hosted by Terrain NRM and JCU’s Centre for Tropical Environmental and Sustainability Science-TESS — provided hands‑on training in thermal drone technology, along with survey design and data collection techniques.

This training is part of our Spectacled Flying‑fox monitoring project, which combines cutting‑edge technology (thermal drones and AI) with traditional ground counts — and the results are proving to be a game changer.

A highlight of the workshop was the yarning circles, where Indigenous Rangers shared ideas and aspirations for caring for Country, blending science and technology with Traditional Ecological Knowledge.

This project is funded by the Australian Government under Saving Native Species and delivered by Terrain NRM as member of the Commonwealth Regional Delivery Partners panel. The thermal drone project is supported with funding from the Australian Government under the National Environmental Science Program.

W**D OF THE MONTH: SINGAPORE DAISY
It looks pretty but Singapore Daisy (Sphagneticola trilobata) is a fast-growing, mat-forming groundcover that is a serious threat to biodiversity in Queensland’s Wet Tropics.

Originally introduced as an ornamental plant, it has become highly invasive —smothering native vegetation, disrupting ecosystems, and invading riparian zones.

What to do about it:
đŸŒŒDon't plant it!
đŸŒŒFragments of Singapore daisy can be spread on mowers and slashers. Carefully clean down equipment.
đŸŒŒHand-pull small infestations, making sure you get all the fragments.
đŸŒŒThere are two herbicides registered for the control of Singapore daisy. Refer to Biosecurity Queensland for up-to-date information on their use.

Download the factsheet on Singapore Daisy on our website at:
https://terrain.org.au/singapore-daisy/

W**d factsheet have been produced by the Far North Queensland Region of Councils (FNQROC), with us, as part of an FNQROC weeds initiative.

"Nature is stunning. And sometimes you're so preoccupied with movement, your thoughts and the scope of the whole forest that you almost miss the little things... that make you stop for a minute and just admire."

We now have an FNQ Farmer Group Calendar - it's online and it covers events and funding opportunities... Last year 17 Far North Queensland farmer groups came together at the Northern Farmer Group Muster (facilitated by DPI) with one clear goal: 👉 Make it easier for producers to connect, plan, and not miss out.

Since then, our Sustainable Agriculture Facilitator Tom Crow has worked with our neighbouring Cape York and Gulf Savannah NRMs to create a one-stop hub for:

đŸŒ± Workshops
🐄 Field days
🎓 Training opportunities
💰 Grants & funding

and it’s growing fast, with 20+ groups already on board.

đŸ“Č Getting started is simple:

Platypus people: Yungaburra Landcare volunteers and Dulgubarra Yidinji Traditional Owners have spent years transforming a weed-choked Peterson Creek into a wildlife haven.

Recently, they've been learning more about platypus action in the creek, through motion-activated cameras, and they've been working with James Cook University researchers to monitor water quality...

Read about it here in a story we wrote for the Wet Tropics Waterways 'Reef & Rivers Magazine': https://wettropicswaterways.org.au/yungaburras-platypus/

Mamu Indigenous Rangers have planted thousands of trees as part of a forest restoration project at East Palmerston near Innisfail.

They are restoring lowland rainforest near Rankin Falls where they’ve removed African tulip trees and planted thousands of native lowland rainforest seedlings. The work is part of Terrain NRM’s Forest Resilience project.

Mamu Ranger Nikita McDowall said the project was “incredibly rewarding”.

“Planting more than 3000 trees to restore lowland rainforest isn’t just work — it feels like healing to us,’’ she said. “It feels like we’re helping Country to breathe again.”

“Lowland rainforest areas are fragile. And they carry stories that are thousands of years old.

“Knowing that the work we do now will outlive us gives it real meaning. Every tree we plant is an investment in the future - for our children, the wildlife and cultural continuity.”

The Forest Resilience project is funded through the Australian Government’s Saving Native Species Program. This two-year project is taking a whole-of-ecosystem approach to benefit multiple threatened species by improving the condition of six priority forest types in the Eastern Forests of Far North Queensland priority place identified in the Australian Government’s Threatened Species Action Plan 2022-2032

It has supported more than 20 on-ground projects, with many led by or delivered in partnership with Indigenous organisations.

This project is funded through the Australian Government’s Saving Native Species Program. Find out more here: https://terrain.org.au/what-we-do/biodiversity/forest-resilience/

Lucky Bronwyn Robertson, from Terrain, had this green ringtail possum in a tree beside her driveway.
Fast Facts: Its name is because of the illusion of colour that's conjured up by the black, yellow and white banding on each hair of its thick fur.
This possum doesn't have a den, sleeping on branches by curling itself forward so that it resembles a large furry ball.
