đłWhat a fantastic couple of days in the Daintree. New technology is transforming the way we detect and count wildlife populations. This week, 12 Indigenous Ranger groups partnering with us to monitor Spectacled Flyingâfoxes came together at the for knowledge sharing and collaboration.
These groups are already building strong drone skills, and this interactive workshop â coâhosted by Terrain NRM and JCUâs Centre for Tropical Environmental and Sustainability Science-TESS â provided handsâon training in thermal drone technology, along with survey design and data collection techniques.
This training is part of our Spectacled Flyingâfox monitoring project, which combines cuttingâedge technology (thermal drones and AI) with traditional ground counts â and the results are proving to be a game changer.
A highlight of the workshop was the yarning circles, where Indigenous Rangers shared ideas and aspirations for caring for Country, blending science and technology with Traditional Ecological Knowledge.
This project is funded by the Australian Government under Saving Native Species and delivered by Terrain NRM as member of the Commonwealth Regional Delivery Partners panel. The thermal drone project is supported with funding from the Australian Government under the National Environmental Science Program.
