Last school holidays some of our Guides and Leaders, along with Guiding friends from across SEQ, embarked on the adventure of a lifetime, travelling to Malaysia to support orangutan conservation and rainforest restoration in the Kinabatangan.
We spent our days in the jungle getting hands-on, maintaining habitats and caring for the environment. Armed with machetes we cleared weeds and maintained 400 trees. We visited a plant nursery in the village of Sukau to learn about the local environment and sustainable practices, while learning we were able to prepare 91 saplings. We finished the cycle by planting 200 new trees to help grow the corridor of life along the river.
While in Sukau, we were welcomed into the homes of local families, who generously shared meals, stories, and culture with us. We learnt traditional dances and crafts, played traditional instruments, and created connections we’ll never forget.
A highlight of our trip was connecting with our Guiding sisters across Malaysia. We had three incredible opportunities to meet and share experiences, first in Kota Kinabalu, then in Sandakan, and after a long journey to Kuala Lumpur, we were surprised by the KL Guides, who hosted a feast of local cuisine (and some Domino’s 🍕). We spent the evening swapping songs, skits, badges, and friendships.
And how could we not take in the beauty and culture of Malaysia along the way. Our trip began with island hopping around Sapi and Manukan Islands, where we snorkelled in crystal-clear waters and encountered amazing wildlife. At the Mari Mari Cultural Village, we learned about the Indigenous peoples of Borneo, explored traditional longhouses, and joined in with some cultural dances. We stayed overnight at the Sabah Tea Plantation, toured the factory, sampled delicious teas, and took in breathtaking views of Mount Kinabalu. To wrap up our journey, we visited the Batu Caves, a batik showroom, the Royal Selangor Pewter factory, and vibrant street markets throughout the city, gaining a deeper appreciation for Malaysia’s rich history and craftsmanship.
This was truly a life-altering experience. We’ve returned home with new perspectives, stronger connections within WAGGGS, and unforgettable memories.
