A Civic Acknowledgement Worth Keeping

Next month marks three years since a majority of Hunters Hill LGA residents voted Yes in the The Voice referendum. How disappointing to see Cr Tannous-Sleiman proposing a Notice of Motion for Tuesday’s night’s Council meeting that proposes doing away with an Acknowledgement of Country at the beginning of every Council Meeting on the grounds that it is “tokenistic”. By all means do more but let’s not let Aboriginal history disappear from our civic life.

Council Approves Tower Blocks for Gladesville!

Council has voted 4–3 to approve two massive 19 storey tower blocks in Gladesville — potentially rising to 27+ storeys — despite overwhelming community opposition. Independent councillors and residents raised serious concerns: overshadowing, traffic gridlock, loss of heritage, no affordable housing, and a plan that benefits the developer over community wellbeing.

The Trust says this decision sets a dangerous precedent, ignores the promised Gladesville Masterplan, pushes density onto one site while long standing infrastructure issues remain unresolved.

We’re now appealing to the NSW Department of Planning and urging residents to speak up.

$40 Million or Community Needs: What Comes First?"

Some important issues that our membership has been following closely were up for discussion at Council’s meeting on 4th May.

Here is a brief overview:

1. Budget Issues
o The draft budget assumes inflation at 3.7%, but the current rate is 4.6%.
o Projected deficits are expected for the next ten years, bar one.
o Revenue relies on uncertain $20M Voluntary Planning Agreement (VPA) contributions from developers and 40M+ from land sales.

2. New Library Development
o Plans for a new $40M development to include a library with high operating costs are not supported.
o Agreements with existing libraries are cost-effective and popular.
o No solid justification has been provided for this new project, and community feedback shows libraries are a low priority.
o Upgrade for Community Services could be achieved much more cost effectively by developing and extending existing site.
Despite these concerns, most Councillors voted to move forward with the proposals.

We wish to inform you that the public exhibition for the disposal of Council-owned land at 4 Pittwater Road, Gladesville, is now open. The site is currently home to the Gladesville Occasional Childcare Centre, which provides affordable care to local families, but has not been guaranteed a new location.

The Priory, such a wonderful location, would be good to see it more readily available for community use. Praise for our local “gorilla economist” Craig James.

After he was forced to retire, Craig James couldn't ignore the knee-high grass and decaying paint job on an 1840s sandstone building down the road.

A huge community win.

On 19 December 2025, the NSW Land & Environment Court dismissed the Appeal to expand Woolwich Marina after three months of deliberation.
This follows earlier unanimous rejections by Hunters Hill Council and the Sydney North Planning Panel — and a determined campaign by local groups, including the Trust, Friends of Kelly’s Bush, sailing organisations, the boating community and so many committed residents.
