What a great afternoon we had for our Grassland walk n talk at Pimpinio on Sunday! We learnt about grassland management with Phill and how to identify native and introduced grasses with Alan. 🌾 Then we got our hands dirty and removed some invasive gazania to give our native species the best chance to thrive.

The Nine Mile Hotel Reserve is a remnant native grassland, an ecosystem that has been heavily cleared and fragmented with remaining patches threatened with w**d invasion, inappropriate land management and soil disturbance. This event was part of our "Grasslands close to extinction: engaging Landcare communities to save the Wimmera’s rarest ecosystem" project funded by Victorian Landcare Grants through the Wimmera CMA and Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action. 🙏

Our next event is this Saturday - Hollows for Habitat in Natimuk from 10am to 3:30pm. Learn about hollow-dwelling species and tools to supplement habitat - enjoy lunch and take a nestbox home! 🦇🦜

Join us for a free community event exploring ways to create habitat for wild life, featuring two approaches: nestboxes and “hollow-hog” carving tool.

Tree hollows are a critical habitat resource for many native species, but they can take decades or even centuries to develop naturally. So...Let's learn how we can supplement this habitat and support wildlife while our landscapes recover.

🪵 What’s on the program?
- Talks from guest speakers Nils Karlsson of Calypto Hollows and Bruce McInnes of Laharum Landcare.
- Explore the role of tree hollows in supporting native wildlife and options for supplementing natural hollows.
- Get hands-on with nestbox assembly.
- See a field demonstration of the “hollow-hog” carving tool in action.

🥪 Lunch provided. Households will have the opportunity to take a nestbox home, subject to availability.

Whether you’re involved in local revegetation, habitat restoration or broader Landcare activities, come along to share knowledge, explore practical techniques and contribute to restoring habitat for our local wildlife.

Join native grass expert Alan Bedggood and other local experts for field talks, plant ID and a light w**ding session to help protect this important remnant grassland site.

Bring gloves, a drink bottle, keep cup, digging tool, sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing.

Do you need help with environmental restoration on your property or with your community group?

Woodcroft College have small groups of year 9 students looking for activities to help the local environment as part of their annual camp. They come with minibus, PPE and some tools. 💪

Tasks could include (but not limited to): w**ding, planting, caring for revegetation, fence or rubbish removal. 🌵 Hosts must be within 1 hour drive of Wartook, be able to provide a safety and activity briefing and have a WWCC. Dates available in October to mid-November.

We're looking for adult helpers with WWCC to assist with school group plantings this Thursday at Green Lake, 10min out of Horsham.
Tasks will include laying plant guards, digging holes and helping in the background so school students can enjoy the planting aspect.
Sessions are 9-11am and 1-3pm - come for one or both sessions.
Snacks/lunch provided.

What a fabulous day at the 29th annual Wimmera Biodiversity Seminar at the Natimuk Soldiers Memorial Hall, learning all about wetlands! We had great conversations at the Landcare stall, in our 40th year of Landcare. 🥳🌱

Our very own President Josh was one of the six amazing presenters, speaking on the topic of "Where Fire Meets Wetland: Observations from the Natimuk fire". We also learnt about inspiring wetland restoration projects, Brolgas, the diversity of microscopic organisms that inhabit wetlands, First Nations and women's perspectives on wetlands, and the Wimmera Mallee Pipeline.

We were lucky to have Costa from Gardening Australia as a very entertaining and charismatic MC. Thanks to all the working group members, sponsors, supporters and everyone involved for a successful day!

The Wimmera Biodiversity Seminar is a much loved event, always on the 1st Thursday of September each year. Mark it into your calendar for 2027 - next year will be the 30th WBS! 💐 🎂
