๐ŸŒฑ World Environment Day ๐ŸŒ

Across the world, annually on 5 June, we celebrate World Environment Day to raise global awareness and inspire action for the protection of our environment. We're reminded that a healthy environment depends on all of us, and you can make a real difference right here in the Wimmera!

Following recent bushfires across our region, weโ€™ve seen firsthand how vulnerable native wildlife can be when habitat is fragmented. These events highlight just how important habitat connectivity is - giving animals and plants a better chance to recover, move and survive.

Horsham District Landcare Network invites you to take action for the environment and join our upcoming community plant-outs as part of our "Little Desert Biolinks for Threatened Species" project. Together, weโ€™re restoring vital habitat and supporting the plants and animals that call our region home ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿ“ Upcoming Plant-Outs:
๐ŸŒฟ Dimboola โ€“ Saturday 20 June
๐ŸŒฟ Grass Flat โ€“ Friday 17 & Saturday 18 July
๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ All are welcome! No experience needed - just bring your energy and care for the land
๐Ÿฅช Volunteers will be well fed

By planting native vegetation, youโ€™ll help reconnect fragmented habitats and restore biodiversity in the landscape.

๐Ÿ“ฉ To RSVP to the Dimboola plant-out on 20 June: email [email protected].
๐Ÿ“ฉ To RSVP to the Grass Flat plant-out on 17-18 July visit Humanitix: https://events.humanitix.com/community-plant-out-2026 or register your interest on our FB event: https://www.facebook.com/share/1EAXf3hFZv/

These plant-outs are supported by the Wimmera CMA, Zoos Victoria and Victorian Government.

Our neighbours at Project Platypus Upper Wimmera Landcare are hosting an event for community members to learn about tree hollows, the species that use them and how you can help. Saturday 30th May in Moyston.

Weโ€™re teaming up with Trust for Nature for a hands-on workshop exploring tree hollows and the wildlife that depend on them.

Booking link: https://habitat-hollows-and-homes-for-wildlife.raiselysite.com/

Hear from arborist and hollow expert Calypto Hollows, who will showcase innovative hollow restoration techniques in action, before getting involved in building log boxes to support native species recovery.

The workshop also includes a field visit to a conservation property impacted by the 2025 Grampians bushfires, where weโ€™ll demonstrate techniques for monitoring and assessing tree hollows after fire, before installing our newly built log boxes to provide important habitat for wildlife. Tickets are limited, so make sure you book your tickets below to confirm your spot!

๐ŸŒฟ Endangered Species Day ๐ŸŒฟ

Today weโ€™re celebrating the incredible native species that call our region home and highlighting how we can all play a part in protecting them.
One of these is the endangered Golden-rayed Blue Butterfly ๐Ÿฆ‹ - endemic to the Wimmera - which relies on just one plant species for its survival: Myoporum parvifolium (Creeping Boobialla).

To support this endangered butterfly and other native species, we are restoring habitat and biodiversity.
๐Ÿ’š Join us for our 2026 community plant-out at Grass Flat:
๐Ÿ“… Friday 17th & Saturday 18th July
๐Ÿ‘‰ More details: https://www.facebook.com/share/1DaTLfT4Rv/

Weโ€™ll be planting Creeping Boobialla to help give the Golden-rayed Blue Butterfly the best chance to thrive into the future, along with other plants to improve biodiversity.
Come along, get your hands dirty, and be part of something meaningful for our local environment ๐ŸŒ
