Lions Lap The Map for Diabetes 2023
Once again it is time to start planning for Lap the Map.
Lions are encouraged to make an effort to participate in this year’s event which coincides with World Diabetes Day which is Tuesday 14 November.
It is important that we continue to raise awareness about the effects of the Diabetes epidemic in Australia.

We all need to be active and do some sort of regular exercise whether it be walking, riding, dancing etc and to promote a healthy lifestyle.

There are a number of ways to get involved with your communities:

 Clubs/individuals can run an event in their local area or join together with another Club nearby.
 Work with other organisations such as Football clubs, Netball clubs, Park Run groups, Little Athletics, Walkers’ Club, Schools etc.

Let’s make it happen – give me a call if you are interested in participating.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.”

Today, we pause to remember and honour the memory of those who served, are currently serving, and those we have lost to the cause🌺

Sunday morning at District Convention in Horsham as the sun rose, so did this keen lot of early rises.
It was a sneakers, tracky dacks and gold coin morning.
But it was all for a wonderful project; Lions Lap the Map for Diabetes 👍🏻

We aimed at the 2 kilometres mark, but did a larger loop and took in the history of the town as we walked, from our Diabetes Awareness Chair Francis Pekin.
Such a wealth of knowledge😊
And then…..it was coffee😳

Lions have a close working relationship with the The Type1 Foundation and they are an invaluable resource with their support of Camp Koala diabetes camps.
It’s now our turn to help them

They have a Christmas Party at Adventure Park Geelong, Victoria on November 27th (near Geelong), for families with Type 1 children.

This is a day where they can all have fun together in a safe environment with their diabetic peer group.

We URGENTLY need donations before November 21 so more families can attend.
The cost is $39 per person.

Electronic donations to:
Type1 Foundation
BSB 633 000
ACC 157 642 935

Please put “Lions Donation” in the description, so we know how much we contribute.
Clubs and personal donations gratefully accepted.
If every Club could consider sponsoring a child...wow! What an impact that would make💛
Lets get behind this V2ers

Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) has been in the news
lately after Australians saw the fulfillment of a pre-election
bipartisan promise, to provide subsidized CGM for all people with
type 1 diabetes as of the 1st July, through the national Diabetes
Services Scheme (NDSS).

CGM devices are small monitors worn on the skin that can monitor glucose levels 24 hours a day, significantly decreasing the frequency of blood glucose finger pricks.

Most CGM devices work either on
the abdomen or upper arm, and stay on for up to 2 weeks - dependent on the type.

They have alarms that can be set to alert the wearer that glucose levels are falling below target, or are elevated above target.

They can also provide alerts.
If glucose levels are rising or dropping rapidly, and can be worn on their own, or blue toothed to a smartphone or insulin pump.

CGM offers not only relief for painful or sensitive fingers with less finger pricks required, but can provide in-depth detail about glucose levels all through the day and night, and can help identify patterns across several days.
In short, they are a game-changer in
diabetes management offering more information, safety, and improved convenience to the wearer.

Knowing that glucose levels are falling before they fall into
hypoglycaemia, can help wearers avoid hypoglycaemic altogether.

Diabetes health care professionals can work with CGM wearers to
identify "total time in range" and areas for improved insulin therapy, working from reports that can be generated.
Some reports can be uploaded and seen by health professionals online,
making appointments much easier.

So, if you have type 1 diabetes and would like to know more about Continuous Glucose Monitoring and the NDSS Subsidy, you can find more information at-
www.ndss.com.au or you can
discuss your options with your local Credentialed Diabetes Educator.

Who knows, you may get to experience your best glucose levels
yet!
Note: Freestyle Libre2 flash glucose monitoring is also available to
people with type 2 diabetes on insulin.
Although it is not covered by the NDSS subsidy, if you have type 2 diabetes and are interested, please talk it over with your Credentialed Diabetes Educator

For more info or to invite Francis to visit you club.
