Learning to eat is a journey!

When children are learning to eat and trying new foods, there can be up to 32 steps along the way. Some children move through these steps one at a time, some move forwards and backwards, and others skip a few steps altogether.

Success isn't just eating the food. Success can happen at any step.

At School Food Matters and through our School Lunch Program, we support children through every stage of the eating journey. We have collected some fantastic 'Steps to Eating' resources on the website: https://www.schoolfoodmatters.org.au/prof-learning-resources/resources/

Teachers are often at the centre of conversations about school food programs, so it's important that their voices are heard.

At the National School Food Summit, researchers from Deakin University shared findings exploring Australian teachers' perspectives on school-provided lunches. While 29% of teachers said "yes" to the idea, almost half (46%) were undecided, reinforcing the need for school food programs that are practical, sustainable and well-supported.

The research reinforces an important message: successful school food programs need to support schools, not add to teacher workload. Through strong partnerships, dedicated food service staff and a whole-school approach, school food programs can help ensure children are well fed while allowing teachers to focus on what they do best: teach.

How do we create school food systems that work across a country as geographically and socially diverse as Australia?

One of the strongest conversations from the National School Food Summit explored the balance between national consistency and place-based delivery.

Across the panel discussion, speakers reflected on the importance of:
• National nutrition standards
• Local flexibility
• Community voices
• Regional solutions
• Delivery models that reflect the needs of different places

Because what works in one community may not work in another, and effective school food systems need to be shaped with communities, not simply delivered to them.

The discussion also highlighted the importance of ensuring First Nations communities and diverse local voices are part of designing what these systems look like in practice.

One of the many conversations at the National School Food Summit was that school food programs are about far more than nutrition alone.

Research presented during the Summit highlighted the social benefits of children eating together at school - supporting connection, inclusion, routine and belonging.

Because lunchtime is not just about food.

It’s also about community.
