Thank you to everyone who came together to help make Backyard Biobanking the success it was! With your help, we’ve been able to get hundreds of climate change threatened plants out into the community, distribute info about how and why they’re threatened, and create a digital record for research and conservation use. Thank you so much for getting involved! It’s been amazing running these three Backyard Biobanking giveaway and educational events. Getting these plants out into the community has been a dream of ours for a while now, so to actually see it happen is just amazing. First of all, we’d like to thank for funding these events through the Youth Climate Action Fund, what an amazing program. Next, we’d like to thank , and for providing the majority of the plants in the giveaways. All of these businesses have given us amazing support throughout these events, as has . We’d also love to thank our amazing team of volunteers - couldn’t have done it without you guys. Stay in touch, and let us know how you go with your little trees!

Getting keen for our Backyard Biobanking plant giveaway this weekend? We’ve got some exciting news: we’ll be raffling off a Deciduous Beech! (Nothofagus gunnii). This species is highly threatened by a changing climate, with no adaptation to the fires approaching its alpine doorstep. We’ll also be raffling off a big Pencil Pine, a Tasmanian Leatherwood, and an Intermediate Pine/Summit Cedar, all to raise money to fund our education, research, and conservation efforts. Don’t worry, we’ll still be running our giveaway, and we’ve got tonnes of amazing species as part of it. Come along and join in being a custodian of our climate change threatened flora.

We’re back at it again! Come along on Sunday the 23rd of November to participate in our alpine and rainforest flora conservation program, Backyard Biobanking! By taking home one of these climate change threatened plants, you’re actively contributing to their safety under a changing climate where fires and droughts are beginning to impact areas of wilderness they haven’t touched in thousands of years. We’ll have plenty of species to give away, so please come along, even if you’ve already got some from our previous events! Stay posted for more details! These events are funded by the Youth Climate Action Fund provided by the Hobart City Council and Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Some recent gems from the South West - thanks ! You leave reception for a few days and everything blows up, so thank you for the awesome news piece about us and our community led flora conservation project

Welcome to all of our new followers! Don’t fret, you haven’t missed out, we’ll be announcing plans for more plant giveaways soon!! Here are a few of the species that we at the Gondwana Project are aiming to protect under a changing climate. Swiping through, we have King Billy Pine (Athrotaxis cupressoides), Pandani and Scoparia (two species of Richea), the majestic Huon Pine (Lagarostrobos franklinii), a cushion plant in flower (possible Dracophyllum minimum), Deciduous Beech (Nothofagus gunnii), Toothed Orites (Orites milliganii), Mt Mawson Pine (Pherosphaera hookeriana), and the Creeping Strawberry Pine (Microcachrys tetragona).

All of these plants are super rare, and are incredibly vulnerable to increasing temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, and an increasing fire impact under a climate crisis. Not only are they threatened, but they’re also important to us - these plants are a big part of the Tasmanian identity

That’s a wrap! (For now…)

Thank you all so much for making both of these events the successes that they were. Over both events, we were able to give out around 400 climate change threatened native plants to over 200 people! I call that a massive win for the conservation of these species. Give yourselves a big pat on the back, because you guys are really the core part of this project - you’re the one’s stepping up as the custodians of these iconic yet incredibly vulnerable flora. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have a questions about their care!

And stay posted for updates! Over the coming weeks, we’ll be pulling together our Backyard Biobanking data base, which all of you who took home a plant are now a part of. Additionally, if we can find funding, we’ll be aiming to run even more of these events in the future! We’d love to keep this ball rolling.

Thanks again to for funding this project, and thank you to all who helped us with the initiative, including , , and . Thanks to for being such amazing hosts, and thank you Alex Parrott for the photos!

We're keeping things exciting! For this giveaway, we'll have some cool new species, as well as the favourites from last time. This time around, we'll have four species of cushion plant as well as the extremely rare Mt Mawson pine (Pherosphaera hookeriana) up for grabs!

Also new to this giveaway is Kunanyi's own conifer - Podocarpus lawrencii - the Mountain Plum pine. As the name suggests, it has a tasty little fruit!

By taking these little guys home, and giving them a place to grow safe from fire and drought, you'll be actively contributing to their survival in a changing climate.

We've got plenty of other species in our giveaway too, including Pencil Pine, Intermediate Pine and King Billy Pine, Huon Pine, Nothofagus cunninghamii, Dwarf Leatherwood, Creeping Strawberry Pine and more! Come see us at the Hobart Brewing Co. at 6pm tomorrow to pick one of these little guys up!

Thank you to and for supplying these beautiful plants for our giveaway project.
