Parks Australia has released proposed changes to the south east Commonwealth marine park network which includes upgraded protection for Joe's Reef in the Freycinet Marine Park from multiple use (minimal protection) to national park zone which excludes all recreational and commercial fishing. Joes Reef rises up from 80m-60m some 6nm off Bicheno.
Members of the Tasmanian Scuba Diving Club were the first to dive Joe's Reef in 2015 where a complex reef system was discovered comprising of wide diversity of fish and invertebrate life, with the highlight being giant black coral trees some exceeding 3m tall, making these the largest invertebrates found on southern Australian reefs. Information regarding the proposed changes can be found at https://consult.dcceew.gov.au/se-marine-parks-network-mgt-plan along with how to make a submission which close on 14 November.
