Great news for one of Tasmania’s rarest freshwater fish! 🐟

Monitoring carried out as part of our Swan galaxias project has confirmed that endangered Swan galaxias translocated to refuge sites are successfully breeding in their new homes. A total of 120 fish were translocated in the first phase of the project, followed by an additional 60 fish more recently.

This exciting milestone marks a significant achievement for NRM South and our project partners the Inland Fisheries Service and , following several years of conservation action aimed at protecting the species from ongoing decline.

This outcome, where self-sustaining populations are thriving in carefully selected, climate-resilient habitats, is a fantastic example of targeted conservation action leading to real on-ground outcomes for a threatened endemic species.

This project is funded by the Australian Government’s Saving Native Species Program and delivered by NRM South.

Earlier this month, 20 TasTAFE Conservation and Ecosystem Management students joined NRM South and the University of Tasmania at Devil’s Corner Winery to help restore a vital saltmarsh bordering the Ramsar-listed Moulting Lagoon.

Over two days, students installed 40 habitat enhancement structures and planted 2,000 saltmarsh plants across five hectares, contributing to the recovery of this important wetland ecosystem while gaining valuable field experience.

We'll continue monitoring the site to track recovery and build our understanding of innovative approaches to saltmarsh restoration.

This project is funded by the Australian Government's Natural Heritage trust and delivered by NRM South, a member of the Commonwealth Regional Delivery Partners panel.

A fantastic positive story from Kingborough Council about how the Kingborough Environmental Fund is supporting landowners to protect vulnerable species and the environments they depend on. A great initiative for our region.

On a warm weekend in May, we wrapped up our 2026 round of Property Management Planning (PMP) workshops at Ripple Farm in the Coal Valley. It was a fantastic end to what has been a successful first foray into smallholdings in the Coal Valley. During this workshop, we learned more about the history of this property and the host farmers’ approach to regenerative farming practices, the changes he has seen over the years, and his plans for the future.

We’ll be opening up another round of workshops towards the end of the year, and we have lots of information about previous workshops on our website. If you’re a smallholder with a farm between 5-100 ha in size living in southern Tasmania, and you’d like to find out more or register your interest early, head to the PMP information page in our linktree for more information.

Today we celebrate the 100th birthday of Sir David Attenborough! Southern Tasmania is home to one of many species named after this legendary conservation icon - Attenborougharion rubicundus, more commonly known as the Burgundy Snail. Listed as rare, and with a very limited range, the Burgundy Snail is under threat from land clearing and bushfire.

We recently completed project work on surveys to find out more about their distribution thanks to a project funded through the Tasmanian Government's Threatened Species Fund. After completing surveys across 75 sites, we were able to find snail presence across most of its known range, although there is evidence that bushfires and timber harvesting have had some impact. It also seemed to show a preference for sites dominated by blue gum and swamp gum, versus sites where there is more stringybark. This information will be used to help guide management for the conservation of this stunning 'semi-slug'.

We think Sir Attenborough would be glad to know one of his namesakes is getting its share of care and attention.

🗓To mark World Wetlands Day celebrations this week, we spent a morning exploring saltmarsh out at Hobart Airport, adjacent to southern Tasmania’s Ramsar-listed Pitt Water–Orielton Lagoon. It was a fantastic turnout, where attendees learned more about the importance of wetlands and why they need protecting and had a chance to take a relaxed wander through the saltmarsh.

🌏Wetlands may cover only 9% of the planet, but they store over a third of the world’s atmospheric carbon and support around 40% of global flora and fauna, making them some of our most powerful and productive ecosystems.

🦋Here in Tasmania, places like Pitt Water–Orielton Lagoon play a vital role in supporting biodiversity, protecting coastlines and storing blue carbon. It was fantastic day to be out on site, learning more about how these systems function.

A big thanks to Hobart Airport for hosting us, and to everyone who joined us to celebrate and learn more about this incredible place. A special thanks also to the Monmouth Pony and Riding Club who helped us out with overflow parking! Keep an eye out for more wetland walks and events coming soon.
