Priority Rail Tasmania

Priority Rail Tasmania This page was created by Future Transport Tasmania to campaign for Fast Rail in Tasmania. We are now

There are some people who believe that the Midland Highway between Hobart and Launceston should be upgraded to a four-lane carriageway for the whole distance. We say that for less money you could have a fast passenger train that runs at 200 km/h and gets you there FASTER. We are confident it would be SAFER, CLEANER and above all CHEAPER. Like and share this page if you too want to see a fast train between our two largest cities.

Tasmania the Road State.
Always building a new road somewhere, or widening a road somewhere.
All to save just a few minutes of travel.
As soon as they finish one project they're on to the next one.
One after another after another after another.
When will it stop?

Whilst this article is about the railway line between Sydney and Melbourne, the principle arguments are valid for Tasmania too.
Even more so in Tasmania, a 'steam-age' alignment remains as an obstacle and a hindrance for efficient rail operations (particularly in Southern Tasmania).
High speed rail may seem overly expensive but it is still cheaper than putting four highway lanes between Hobart and Launceston (fortunately the State Government seems to have walked away from that commitment).
Even if there were no passenger services, the reality is that it takes far too long for a freight train to get from Burnie to Hobart, despite the fact that rail can be up to seven times more energy efficient.
Transport also accounts for the majority of Tasmania's CO2 emissions, and prioritising freight to rail would guarantee a reduction in emissions.

Improving the rail link between Australia’s two biggest cities will have many benefits, not least in meeting our carbon-reduction goals

What do we want?
For TasRail to GROW.
MORE freight on RAIL.
CLOSED lines REOPENED (for freight and passenger).
19th Century Alignments FIXED for 21st Century needs.
And for TasRail to STAY State-Owned.

Tasmania's economy once relied on rail. Now sadly, a fraction of the total freight task travels through the state by rail (and none of the passengers of course, except for a very few tourist lines such as the West Coast Wilderness Railway).
This book which came out last year in commemoration of 150 years of rail in Tasmania, is still available in many good bookshops. We strongly recommend you get hold of a copy if you have not already done so.
If you're not already aware of Tasmania's rail history and what we have lost - this book will help you learn that.
