CPSU members campaigned, negotiated and took industrial action to turn a poor government offer into a three-year wages and conditions package with back pay, improvements to leave and other conditions, and stopped proposed changes to cut conditions.

Without union member action your pay and conditions don’t improve.

TasTAFE cuts will send Tasmania backwards

Budget Estimates this week confirmed:

📈 Fees up 7%
📉 118 jobs cut — including 63 teachers

These cuts will hit students hardest — with fewer courses and less support.

CPSU General Secretary Thirza White told the media:

“Behind every course is a team of admin, library and student support staff who make learning possible. Cut those roles, and you cut students’ chances to succeed.”

“Non-teaching staff are already stretched. These cuts will push the system past breaking point.”

“This is what happens when you treat TasTAFE like a business instead of a public service. As a Government Business Enterprise, it is being forced to chase savings rather than deliver for the community.”

“This is short-term, regressive thinking. Cutting services now to fix poor financial management will only create bigger problems down the track.”

“Cutting dozens of jobs across TasTAFE does nothing but take our state backwards and undermine the services students depend on every day.”

Tasmania needs investment in skills, staff and students — not more cuts.

Life’s rocky under Rockliff.

The Rockliff government has broken its election promise to not privatise public services and assets and has put out an EOI for the redevelopment and operations of Hastings Cave Visitor Centre and Thermal Springs.

CPSU General Secretary, Thirza White:
“Instead of honouring its 2021 promise to invest $3 million in Hastings, this government is walking away from a public redevelopment that could have delivered long-term revenue for Tasmania and handing the opportunity to the private operator instead.”

“Hastings Caves State Reserve is a public asset, not a private business opportunity, the Rockliff government should be investing in it for the public good, not outsourcing Tasmania’s natural heritage for private profit.”

“If Jeremy Rockliff’s government is willing to privatise part of an iconic natural precinct like Hastings instead of maximising its potential, no public asset is safe.”

“With around 59,000 visitors last year, Hastings Cave is a major tourism site and should be a public revenue earner for Tasmania — but this government would rather hand it over to private business than ensure the Tasmanian community benefits from the profit it will generate.”

Privatising public services and assets is never the right move. They belong to the public and a for the public.

The state government continued to cut the public sector while staff struggle with chronic staffing shortages and services Tasmanians rely on suffer.

“Budget Estimates is meant to be the community’s opportunity to grill the government on the state budget. What we heard from the Premier was more ducking and weaving. Tasmanians still don’t know which jobs are going, which services will be cut, or how this will roll out."

CPSU General Secretary, Thirza White on yesterday's Estimates Committee featuring the Premier and Head of State Service in the House of Assembly.
