TasCAHRD The Tasmanian Council on AIDS, Hepatitis, and Related Diseases (TasCAHRD)

While working in partnership with Tasmanian communities towards the elimination of blood-borne viruses and associated stigma and discrimination, TasCAHRD provides services that promote the health and well-being of people living with, affected by or at risk of HIV and hepatitis. TasCAHRD has multiple streams of service: health promotion, Red Thread Media, and tasPPL, the care and assistance program

. Our health promotion initiative builds health literacy on blood-borne viruses and s*xually transmitted infections to reduce stigma and transmissions while increasing testing and treatment. We offer Bloodwise education sessions for organisations and community groups about HIV, viral hepatitis, STIs, and reducing the associated stigma and discrimination. TasPPL supports those living with or at risk of blood-borne viruses by providing case management, advocacy, referrals, financial assistance, and information about treatments, testing, transmission and prevention. TasCAHRD publishes a quarterly lifestyle magazine, Red Thread (digital copies can be found at https://issuu.com/tascahrd)

TasCAHRD also operates Red Thread Studios, an audio-visual recording studio

Hepatitis B care is becoming more accessible.

From 1 September, doctors and nurse practitioners no longer need specialist s100 accreditation to prescribe hepatitis B antiviral treatment.

For Tasmania, this is an important step towards making hepatitis B care easier to access, particularly for people who may face barriers getting to specialist services.

Women make up more than 10 percent of people living with HIV in Australia. While HIV affects everyone differently, women often face particular challenges.

It's , which focuses on good health and wellbeing for women and girls.

As woman with HIV you have the right to:

👉 choose when and if you tell people about your HIV status
💉 take control of your health and make your own decisions about how you live with HIV
👩‍⚕️ work with your doctor to choose which antiretroviral treatments you take
🏥 to change treatment if it isn’t working for you
❤️ a full and active s*x life
👶 have children
👷‍♀️work and to make changes to the way you work
🤍 high quality health care in an environment which is supportive, sensitive and free from discrimination

There are approximately 10 alcohol and/or drug related ambulance attendances per day in Tasmania.

Overdose is preventable, and there are simple things we can all do to help save lives.

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day. 💜

It is important learn how to recognise an overdose, know how to respond, and get familiar with naloxone, a medication that can temporarily reverse an opioid overdose.

You can access naloxone and learn how to use it through the Hobart NSP at 319 Liverpool, Hobart.

Our Education and Outreach star, Naomi is back from Fiji after attending inaugural Pacific HIV Symposium 2026 in Nadi last week.

The two-day gathering brought together people from across the Pacific, including health professionals, community members, people living with HIV, government representatives, clinicians and researchers, to share experiences and work together on the region’s HIV response.

There were conversations about prevention, testing, treatment, stigma and community-led responses, with a strong focus on working together across the Pacific.

A regional action plan was developed over the two days and will now be taken forward to Pacific Leaders.

It was a great opportunity for us to connect with colleagues from across the region, learn from their experiences and bring some of those conversations back to Tasmania.
