We are all witnessing global heating, an extinction crisis and ongoing Labor sanctioned logging, deforestation, and more coal and gas approvals.

Labor wants to allow polluters to keep polluting while buying carbon credits from native forests. Offsets allow carbon polluters to buy the credits rather than reduce their pollution.

Over the last 150 years, Australia has created 600 national parks for their natural and cultural values, for the nation for all times: this Labor move means future national parks will depend on trading companies getting priority. It is the wrong way to go.

Former Leader of the Australian Greens Christine Milne says the latest plan to protecting forests could have a troubling implication for setting a national precedent that is unecessary.

Our Patron Christine Milne comment today in Tasmania's Mercury.

On September 15, the Australian Senate will vote on a motion to disallow a regulation known as Improved Native Forest Management (INFM).

It might sound innocuous. It is not.

The regulation goes to the heart of Australia’s climate and forest policies and, if allowed to stand, will establish a dangerous national precedent.

The community is being blackmailed: agree to sell the forest carbon in the proposed Great Koala National Park to big polluters, or there will be no national park – the logging will continue, the forests will fall and the koalas will die.

The science is clear: we have run out of time. Australia must rapidly stop burning and exporting coal and gas while at the same time protecting forest ecosystems as habitat for endangered species and as vital carbon stores.

Australia needs genuine emissions reductions and genuine forest protection simultaneously – not accounting tricks that allow both governments and polluters to benefit by claiming climate action while avoiding emissions reduction.

The Senate should disallow INFM.

Today is Threatened Species Day! Across the nation threatened species habitat is being destroyed by logging, land clearing and deforestation.

In this age of climate and biodiversity crises native forests and their wildlife should be protected nationwide without allowing polluters to keep polluting with carbon credits from forests.

Bob Brown commented today - "The Tasmanian parliament passed legislation to ‘extirpate’ the thylacine in 1888 by putting a one pound bounty on its head. In 2026, the legislation before parliament in Canberra introduces carbon trading as a requirement for saving koalas. “I understand the desperation of fellow environmentalists faced with the Minns government’s failure to keep its promise of a Great Koala National Park, but the fate of the depicted Tasmanian tiger is poignant.
