Last Wednesday, Interim Commissioner for Children and Young People Ros Cornish AM joined Peter Gee and Jeremy Picone at Kingston Library for National Simultaneous Storytime 2026, reading 'Luna Roo: The Kangaroo Baller' to a room full of young readers. 📚🐾

Organised by Libraries Tasmania, the event was part of a nationwide celebration that saw children, families, teachers and library lovers reading the same book at the same time. Across Tasmania, schools, libraries and other community spaces were also sharing Luna Roo together, celebrating the joy of reading and storytelling.

Published by Little Book Press, Luna Roo: The Kangaroo Baller follows Luna and her friends as they chase their football dreams across the outback, highlighting teamwork, determination and fun. Written by Adam Jackson and Adrian Lloyd, and illustrated by Jake Minton, the book was selected as the official National Simultaneous Storytime 2026 title from 84 submissions from publishers around Australia.

This was a wonderful day spent sharing stories, sparking imaginations and celebrating the power of reading. 📖✨

Recently, Interim Commissioner for Children and Young People Ros Cornish AM visited Tassie Mums to learn more about work of this busy grassroots charity.

At a humble warehouse in Kingston, the Interim Commissioner met founder and CEO Clair Harris. There, she heard about the work this volunteer-run powerhouse is doing to address significant need within the community, and also pitched in to help package essentials to be distributed to babies, children and young people across Tasmania.

During her visit, the Interim Commissioner learned that in the last financial year, Tassie Mums provided essentials, including clothing, nappies, toiletries, cots, car seats, prams and more, to 2,785 children and young people. These items, donated by generous individuals and corporate sponsors, had an estimated value of close to one million dollars.

Reflecting on her visit, Interim Commissioner Cornish said: “I was blown away by the commitment and dedication of everyone involved. Their neatly organised facility was bursting at the seams with donated goods and, while we were speaking, a steady stream of social service agencies arrived to collect items for distribution to the community.”

Today is the International Day Against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination ( ).

Every child and young person deserves to feel safe, respected and included, no matter who they are or who they love.

Discrimination hurts. Listening to LGBTQIA+ young people, affirming their identities, and standing up against unfair treatment helps create a more equal world for everyone. 🏳️‍🌈

Today, 30 April, marks the International Day to .

No child deserves to experience violence. By ending corporal punishment, we can break cycles of harm, uphold children’s human rights, and create safer, more supportive environments for children to grow and thrive ✊

The Office of the Commissioner for Children and Young People has long advocated for an end to corporal punishment. Recently, former Interim Commissioner Crompton wrote to Tasmania's Attorney-General to advocate for legislative reform as well as public education to promote knowledge about the harms of physical punishment and the benefits of alternative parenting strategies.
