In an opinion piece published in the Mercury last week, Stewart Frusher and Andrew Wright write that renewed salmon farming licenses in Macquarie Harbour would show a lack of respect for Tasmania’s unique biodiversity and the health of Tasmania’s coastal waters.

“The conservation advice, the EPA’s own data and IMAS’s scientific reports demonstrate that continued farming of salmonids in Macquarie Harbour is unsustainable and continues to be a major contributor to the threat of extinction of the Maugean skate.”

Stewart Frusher is a retired IMAS professor, and Andrew Wright is the former executive director of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission.

Last week Tasmania’s state budget for the coming year was released, and it delivered some important wins for Tasmania’s marine environment!🎉

The budget includes $500,000 towards development of the proposed Marine Environment Tasmania Act (META).

It also allocates another year of funding towards Tasmania’s long-spined sea urchin subsidy program.

In the currently strained fiscal climate, it’s encouraging to see continued investment in the long-term health of Tasmania’s marine environment.

On today’s international day of Biological Diversity, we want to celebrate the unique and diverse nature that can be found in Tasmania.

This year’s theme is about the importance of local, community-led action to fight global biodiversity loss, something we care very deeply about.

More than 680 plant and animal species are currently listed under Tasmania’s Threatened Species Act. Several of these are endemic to Tasmania, meaning they can be found nowhere else on earth. If they disappear here, they disappear forever.

Environment Tasmania is working hard to safeguard our unique species and landscapes, alongside multiple other incredible organisations across our island state.

If you want to take action for biodiversity you can:

🌿 Volunteer with your local community / bushcare group - get hands on protecting the environment closest to you

📣 Speak up for nature - raise awareness and support Environment Tasmania and all the other amazing organisations working around our island state

In a report published earlier this year, CSIRO finds the Salmon Industry’s social license is at an all time low.

Since the last survey in 2021, both marine scientists and government/local councils have shifted in their attitude towards salmon aquaculture, from ‘strongly positive’ to ‘strongly negative’.

The report indicates overall worsening attitudes towards this industry that is one of the primary threats to the survival of the Maugean Skate.

Today is international endangered species day.
It’s a day to act.
This week the federal budget ensured more dollars for nature destruction than for nature protection.
It’s time to remind Federal Minister for the Environment Murray Watt that he has an obligation to prevent extinctions from happening.
His obligation is to protect the natural values of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, and one of those values is the ancient Gondwana relic, the Endangered Maugean Skate.

Last month we went to Canberra to remind him.
Now we need your help by adding your name to the open letter.
Strengthen our message to remove or significantly reduce salmon biomass in Macquarie harbour, so Macquarie Harbour once again becomes a safeguard for the future of the Maugean Skate.

Thank you to the 100 supporters in Melbourne who came to see our invitational screening of Love Letter to the Unseen!🎉

We had a roomful of families and conservationists eager to learn as much as they could about the Endangered Maugean skate, the world’s only brackish water skate, and what they can do to make sure its population is able to recover from the brink of extinction.
