🌿🌊 Meet the ocean’s underwater giants! 💚
Tasmania’s Giant kelp forests are bustling underwater worlds, providing food, shelter and a home for countless marine species. And here’s a mind-blowing fact: Giant kelp can grow up to 60 cm in just ONE day! 🤯

But these incredible forests are disappearing, threatened by rising ocean temperatures, marine heatwaves and hungry sea urchins.

💙 The Great Southern Reef is a vital part of Australia’s marine ecosystem, supporting incredible biodiversity and coastal communities. Protecting its Giant kelp forests is essential for a thriving, healthy ocean! 🌊🌿

Did you know that invasive willows are a major threat to Tasmania’s rivers and creeks? 💧🌳

Last week we attended ALCA 2026's workshop hosted by the powerhouse Derwent Catchment Project

It was amazing to see the progress being made against willows across the Derwent catchment - we were also lucky to see a platypus enjoying their restoration work at the Platypus Walk in Hamilton!

Did you know?

In 2025, the Tasmanian Government committed to creating a new Marine Environment Act.
The idea is simple: bring Tasmania’s marine laws and management together, and give our ocean better chance of thriving in face of challenges like climate change and invasive species.
Right now, our marine environment is managed through a patchwork of different laws and agencies. A new Act would create a more collaborative approach — with a shared vision for a healthy ocean that works for everyone.
A healthy ocean means healthy communities, thriving fisheries, places to swim, fish and dive, and a coast we can enjoy for generations to come.
The opportunity is here. Let’s get this right.

In 2025, heading into a second summer in a row, the salmon industry experienced unprecedented fish deaths in south-east Tasmania.

In response, emergency approval was granted to use florfenicol, a new antibiotic, in Tasmanian waterways. After 5.4 tonnes of the drug were used, the APVMA revoked the approval amid concerns about risks to other fisheries. Traces were detected in wild fish up to 14km from treated salmon pens, and health warnings were issued.

The antibiotic effectively shut down Tasmania’s lobster export industry and put abalone fisheries at risk due to China’s strict rules on antibiotic residues in imported seafood.

Now, with salmon deaths climbing again, and a third summer of mass mortality on the horizon, the industry has applied for full registration to continue using the drug.

Environment Tasmanian backs lobster and abalone fishers, who are jointly raising concerns about the risks to their industries, while the public still has not seen any comprehensive antimicrobial resistance study since the initial heavy florfenicol use in the summer of 2025/26

Without that study, serious questions remain about the potential impacts of antibiotic use on Tasmania’s waterways, wild fish and other fisheries.

Nature lovers descended on Hobart last week for the annual conference. It was brilliant to see so many First Nations people, from across Australia, in attendance. It was also refreshing to see so many young people at the conference. Shout out to who are driving a new wave of youth-driven, nature-positive energy across Australia and who are educating the next generation of Tasmanian conservationists. We hope to collaborate with both organisations in 2027. It was also brilliant to see '1% for Nature' repeatedly promoted at the conference - which is a national campaign we are proud to be leading on, here in Tasmania.

Welcome to the team, Dekota!
We’re excited to welcome Dekota Mark, our new Healthy Oceans Coordinator at Environment Tasmania.
Dakota recently completed a Master of Marine and Antarctic Science at University of Tasmania, where her research explored how Tasmanians understand and connect with the marine environment through educational games.
She’s also a talented artist who creates artwork from the diverse seaweeds found along the coastlines of Lutruwita/Tasmania.
We’re looking forward to having Dekota bring her marine science, creativity and passion for Tasmania’s ocean to the team.
