HUGE WIN for water loving Tasmanians!!🎉🏊‍♂️💧

Yesterday the Legislative Council agreed with - all Tasmanians should be able to swim and play in their waterways without being exposed to under-treated sewage.

Independent Member for Huon MLC moved a motion calling for a report into the feasibility of rolling-out of real-time monitoring of sewage bypass events.

The motion was unanimously supported by ALL members of the House.

A BIG THANK YOU to the hundreds of people who signed the petition calling for action - it shows what can happen when people on the ground stand up for what they believe in. ✊

New data reported by ABC News shows global ocean temperatures have reached a record 21.1 C - narrowly exceeding the previous record set in 2024. Scientists say the record is being driven by a powerful El Niño, on top of the longer-term warming caused by human activity.

“These temperature readings are our canary in the coal mine.” says Jess Coughlan, Save The Skate campaigner, Environment Tasmania.

“The Tasmanian Government must move quickly to progress the Marine Environment Tasmania Act and deliver stronger protection for our oceans, giving Tasmania’s marine life the best possible chance of resilience in a warming world.” says Rebecca Howarth, Marine Campaigner from Environment Tasmania.

“For our freshwater systems, low flow events will exacerbate pollution risks, algae blooms and put our freshwater species under increasing pressure.” says Lucy Tremain, Freshwater Campaigner.

For Tasmania this matters. We can’t control the temperature of the world’s oceans from Tasmania. Our oceans are changing. Let’s make sure Tasmania’s marine environment is as resilient as possible to meet that change.

Bird flu has arrived. It’s confirmed. Sadly several infected Greater crested terns and Silver gulls have been founded on Flinders Island and near Burnie, and a Brown skua at Rocky Cape.

This is enormously concerning for Tasmania which is a hotspot for seabird activity. We have over half the world’s albatross species and unusually high numbers of sub-Antarctic species which are not found further north.

Some of the species that breed here are actually Threatened like Little terns and Hooded plovers.

H5N1 Bird Flu has arrived here on seabirds flying in from sub-Antarctic Islands like the Heard & MacDonald Islands, and has long been anticipated with fear for our vulnerable bird populations.

You can do your bit! Please don’t touch sick or dead birds or other animals, and report any unusual behaviour or mortalities to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888, 24 hours a day.

97% of submissions to the proposed Tasmanian Sardine Fishery consultation raised concerns about the scale, saying that 7,500 tonnes is too much.

The message from the community is clear: there is deep concern about opening up a new industrial fishery for a small fish that plays a big role in the marine food web in Tasmania.

Sardines are crucial food for penguins, dolphins and other marine life like tuna.

Other concerns raised in submissions were:
- the need for more research into the sardine stock first,
- the impact to recreational fisheries,
- accidental bicatch of other marine species,
- whether licenses would be prioritised for Tasmanians and
- where the sardines will end up – with many submissions stating unhappiness wild Tasmanian sardines heading to feed farmed salmon and not Tasmanians.

The Maugean skate is running out of time.

Please sign the petition calling for urgent action to protect the skate before this year’s predicted El Niño conditions put even more pressure on its last remaining population.

Remember when there was a chance to pause salmon farming in Macquarie Harbour?

For the first time, the industry could have faced a federal environmental assessment—giving the harbour a chance to recover from decades of pollution, and the skate a chance to recover.

Instead, the Prime Minister introduced a rushed legal change that effectively stopped that assessment from happening.
Last month, Environment Tasmania and First Dog on the Moon took the campaign to the PM’s electorate. Most people we spoke to already knew about the skate—and agreed that more must be done to prevent its extinction.

Science tells us we may be running out of time.
