The Australian Society of Miniature Art Tasmania Inc (ASMA Tasmania) was founded in 1992 by Bernadette Connor, owner of the Hibiscus Gallery in Hobart, as one of four Australian State-based Miniature Art Societies. It was a member of the World Federation of Miniaturists (WFM) that was formed in London in 1995 (as at 2020, the WFM no longer exists). Bernadette remained Pr

esident of ASMA Tasmania until she retired in 2000 after the second WFM Exhibition and Conference held in Hobart in September that year. Also in 2000, Bernadette was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for Service to the Arts in Tasmania. After Bernadette retired, Joan Kelly, one of the foundation members of ASMA Tasmania, was elected President, remaining in that position until she was succeeded by Patricia Young in 2012, Barbara Etter in early 2020 and then Joan Humble OAM later that year. Miniature art is a speciality art form which traces its roots back to books of illuminated manuscripts from the 6th and 7th centuries. A miniature painting is not a small piece cut from a larger painting, but a little artwork created in its entirety on a small surface with a fine brush, pen, pencil or etching tool. Today’s miniaturists work with a variety of media, styles and subjects to produce exquisite detailed “Little Gems”. Examples of the range of media on display in ASMA Tas. exhibitions include oils, acrylics, watercolours, coloured pencils, mixed media, inks, gouache, pastels, scraper board and silk dyes. ASMA Tasmania Inc currently has about 40 members, including several from interstate and overseas. Members enter their miniature paintings in exhibitions throughout Tasmania as well as in Victoria and New South Wales. Several members are also members of, and exhibit with, miniature art societies overseas. ASMA Tasmania accepts both traditional and contemporary work. The work must be no larger than 100 square centimetres and has to be created using the finest brush or pen strokes. In 2000, ASMA Tasmania hosted the 2nd WFM Exhibition in Hobart, Tasmania. Eight years later we hosted the 4th WFM Exhibition in Burnie, also in Tasmania. For the latter event the society was awarded the Australia Day best event held in Burnie in 2008.

Ill-health forced Patricia to retire in February, 2020. Barbara Etter ably filled the role until the AGM in August of the same year, when Joan Humble OAM was elected our fifth President.
