June is CMV Awareness Month.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is one of Australia's most significant — and least talked about — causes of childhood disability.
Did you know?
- Every year, 400 Australian infants are born with a disability caused by CMV
- CMV causes 20 times more pregnancy abnormalities than toxoplasmosis, rubella and listeriosis combined
- Around 10% of cerebral palsy cases are linked to CMV, and it's the leading cause of neurosensory hearing loss in children

Simple habits can reduce the risk:
✅Wash with care — wash hands after changing nappies
✅Kiss with care — choose the forehead over the lips
✅Don't share — keep dummies, food and utensils separate from infants

If you're pregnant, planning a family, or know someone who is — please share this post and help spread the word.

Last chance to submit — deadline extended to 5 June 2026!

If you've been sitting on a research project, program evaluation, or practice innovation, now is the time to act.

Abstract submissions for the 2026 ACIPC International Conference close 5 June 2026 — don't miss your opportunity to share your work on the region's biggest stage for infection prevention and control.

The conference runs 8–11 November 2026 on the Gold Coast, Queensland, and this year's theme — From Knowledge to Action: Delivering Impact in Infection Prevention & Control — puts real-world outcomes front and centre.

We're looking for submissions that showcase emerging evidence, innovative strategies, and practical approaches that are genuinely moving the needle in IPC. If your work is making a difference, the sector needs to hear about it.

WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus yesterday provided a sobering update on the rapidly evolving Ebola outbreak in the DRC and Uganda.
Over 900 suspected cases and 220 suspected deaths have been recorded in the DRC, with 101 confirmed cases and 10 confirmed deaths. Uganda has reported five confirmed cases and one death.
The response faces significant challenges — delayed detection, active conflict and mass displacement, deep community distrust, and no approved vaccines or therapeutics for the Bundibugyo strain.
WHO has released US$3.9 million in emergency funding and is working closely with Africa CDC and national governments on contact tracing, treatment and community engagement.

The Australian Centre for Disease Control has published new Hantavirus guidance documents covering exposure management, infection control, and repatriation protocols.

As a hantavirus outbreak continues to generate global concern, Australian health authorities have moved to provide clarity for clinicians and public health units, releasing three targeted guidance documents through the Australian Centre for Disease Control.
While the risk to Australians remains low, the outbreak — driven by the Andes virus strain — has prompted questions around management of exposed individuals, passengers aboard affected cruise ships, and those being repatriated to Australia. The new documents address each of these scenarios directly.

Australia’s robust disease surveillance infrastructure has been cited as a key advantage in managing the situation. ACIPC President Dr Sally Havers provided expert representation to the CDNA for ACIPC.
