Sunday 21 June was Global MND Awareness Day 💙

MND is a progressive neurological condition that affects the motor neurones in the brain and spinal cord. As these nerves that send messages to the muscles are disrupted, people may experience increasing weakness, stiffness, and loss of movement, which can affect walking, talking, eating, drinking, and breathing. Everyone’s experience of MND is different, and symptoms can progress at different speeds.

There is currently no cure for MND, but with the right medical care, supports, and community understanding, symptoms can be managed to help people live as well as possible for as long as possible.

BIAT stands alongside people living with neurological conditions and their support networks. This MND Awareness Day, we honour lived experience, raise awareness, and support continued advocacy, care, and research.

How amazing are all of these hearts! A huge thank you to our friend and colleague, Christine, for donating 257 handmade hearts! 💛🩵🧡

We currently have 1,571 hearts and counting!

But to get to 7,700, we need your help.

This year, for Brain Injury Awareness Week, we’re on a mission to make 7,700 hearts - each one representing the estimated number of Tasmanians who acquire a brain injury every year.

Together, they’ll become a powerful art installation and then be shared with people in hospitals and rehabilitation services as a small symbol of connection, support, and community.

If you would like to get involved and contribute to this meaningful cause, visit the link in the comments to find out more about how you can make and donate hearts!

Together, they’ll become a powerful art installation and then be shared with people in hospitals and rehab services as a small symbol of connection, support, and community.

Right now… we’ve made 1,233 hearts ✨ (and counting!)

And to get to 7,700, we need your help!

Here are some ways you can make your own heart:

🧵 Sew it
🧶 Knit/crochet it
🪵 Carve it from wood (nice and smooth!)
🏺 Shape it from clay (either air drying or kiln fired)
🎨 Or get creative with whatever you’ve got!

✨ There’s no such thing as perfect—every heart matters! You could even get your friends together and have a craft session!

Please drop-off or post your hearts to:

ABC Centre

Today on World Brain Tumour Day, we take the time to honour the strength of those living with brain tumours and their families, and to remember those we’ve lost 🧡

A brain tumour affects each person differently, but it is important to recognise that it is also a form of acquired brain injury. Because the brain controls how we think, feel, behave, and move, even a small tumour can change how someone experiences daily life - impacting memory, emotions, communication, physical abilities, and independence. These changes can be subtle or significant, and often affect not just the individual, but their loved ones as well.

Today is an opportunity to highlight the importance of early detection and ongoing research. Understanding brain tumours through the lens of brain injury helps foster greater empathy, patience, and support for those navigating these complex and deeply personal challenges.
