Friends of Soldiers Memorial Avenue

Friends of Soldiers Memorial Avenue FOSMA was set up to restore and preserve the Soldiers Memorial Avenue on the Queens Domain in Hobart , Tasmania. Over 530 trees were planted.

The Avenue was planted in 1918 and 1919 to commemorate those who had died on service in the Great War. The Soldiers Memorial Avenue was planted as the Great War began its fourth year. In Tasmania, at the bottom of the world, a third of the population came out for the first dedication day on Sunday August 3, 1918. The Avenue had been prepared by working bees on wintry Saturday afternoons. Families,

friends and workmates walked or rode to the Domain to collect tools to prepare the holes for the trees. in all nearly 10,000 people attended the dedication of the first trees - nearly 390. in February 1919 a new crowd gathered to planted more trees for those who were not returning. in all by 1926 over 530 trees had been planted. Another war, the death of those who knew the men directly and the loss of all except 11 nameplates meant that by 2000 few knew what the Avenue was or even where it was. A section in the north had disappeared under a tip in 1961 - a promise to replant the trees unkept. Since 2003, FOSMA has worked with the Hobart City Council, RSL Tasmania, Tassal Group, and many donors large and small to restore it. For the basic work, we are nearly there.

A little late in the day but today is the anniversary of the second planting and dedication of trees in 1919. Over 110 trees were planted - some in what is now the outer row as you head up the Avenue from Davies Avenue to the Magazine. The balance completed the top end of the Avenue to the Cross Roads.

The Governor gave a fine speech and was pleased to attend as his broken leg had healed from the accident that prevented his leading the dedications in 1918.

TOMORROW at 2pm, the Friends of Soldiers Memorial Avenue will be having a Rededication of Plaques on Soldiers Memorial Avenue. Please see location attached.

This event is to reinstall all the plaques that were stolen in June 2025 (and then recovered and restored). This work has been undertaken jointly with Council staff, APCO Engineering and FOSMA volunteers.

Our Patron the Governor of Tasmania, Her Excellency Barbara Baker AC will be in attendance and deliver an address. On the day, we will have a number of descendants attend who will unveil their relevant plaque.

Unfortunately, carparking will be difficult on the day. You may be able to get parking around the TCA ground, or you could park at Legacy Park and around Soldiers Memorial Oval and walk down the Avenue to the event. Please allow enough time to park and walk so you can be at the event for the arrival of the Governor.

Any queries, please call John Wadsley, FOSMA President on 0417 487 289

Serious Damage to Trees due to Fire Damage
A detailed examination along the Avenue between the Oval and the Magazine was conducted yesterday.
The results were shocking to say the least and much worse than first thought.
While checking the trees, Council staff doing the same job were sighted. Strong representations were made pointing out this was extreme negligence and did not even comply with the HCC's own management plan for the Avenue.

In some instances, fire moved UNDER the canopies of original trees from 1918. These trees are marked by an asterisk *

More Bad News from the Avenue.
In July during Council burning, a number of Avenue trees were damaged by heat during a low grass burn within the Avenue.

A few smaller trees that date from 2009 will have to be replaced having lost most of their foliage. Some other original trees dating from 1918 have had lower limbs severely damaged and will require pruning.

A full audit is being conducted by Committee members.

The area affected is on the lower side of the Avenue from the Gunpowder Magazine to the Oval stairs. If you are connected to a tree in this area, you may wish to go up yourself to check out what has happened.

It is very disappointing to say the least that the damage was a result of carelessness by Council.

Usually before any burning on the southern Domain, FOSMA would be informed. It was understood that any burning within the Avenue footprint would be managed to PROTECT the trees
The Committee is trying to get some sense out of the HCC over why this has happened.
