Sharing this post from the LGBTQ Domestic Violence Awareness Foundation for LGBTQ Domestic Violence Awareness Day (May 28). LGBT DV Awareness Day is for raising visibility, breaking shame, and reminding survivors they never have to choose between their identity and safety. This is important because six in ten LGBTQ people have experienced violence or abuse by an intimate partner in their lifetime.
In Tasmania, if you or someone you care about is experiencing domestic or family violence, Engender Equality have specialist LGBTIQA+ support workers who can help. Call Engender Equality on 6278 9090 and you can ask for an appointment with a LGBTIQA+ support worker. There's a link to their website, specifically their LGBTIQA+ Family Violence Service in the comments of this post.
Call 000 if you are experiencing an emergency.
LGBTIQA+ phone support services include:
Q-Life 1800 184 527 3pm - 12am every day
Rainbow S*xual, Domestic and Family Violence Helpline 1800 497 212 available every day, all day.
Domestic and family violence doesn’t look the same for everyone. For many LGBTQ+ victim-survivors, abuse is compounded by the fear of coming out and the fear of their abuser.
More than 60% of LGBTQ+ people will experience domestic, family, or intimate partner violence in their lifetime, yet many remain unseen and unsupported.
Founded in 2020, LGBTQ Domestic Violence Awareness Day (May 28) is now a global movement across 20 countries, raising visibility, breaking shame, and reminding survivors they never have to choose between their identity and safety.
Together, we can create a future with no invisible victim-survivors 🌈
