Marine scientists have released 65 captive-bred red handfish into waters off Hobart - a major milestone for one of Australia’s rarest marine species.

Fewer than 250 of the tiny fish, which ‘walk’ on hand-like fins, remain in the wild across two reefs in Frederick Henry Bay.

Researchers from the University of Tasmania spent months restoring habitat before the release, aiming to boost survival and recovery.

Unlike most fish, handfish can’t disperse to new areas. They lack a planktonic larval stage, meaning their young can’t drift on ocean currents to colonise fresh territory.

Conservationists say the effort proves even species on the brink can be saved through teamwork, breeding programs and ongoing habitat restoration.

For sometime the Tasmanian Government has not had a policy on marine protected areas. Even though they are titularly part of the national framework. The Tasmanian Government has done everything possible wipe out any previous reference to a policy from the internet (even archive purposes). With decided to post the last policy of the Tasmanian Government.
