Did you miss out on a ticket to the SOLD OUT launch of Els Wakefield's magnificent new book on Wednesday? Held at the Battery Point Community Hall, in conversation with former senator Bob Brown, it was certainly a night for the birds.

Here's your link to grab a copy 🐦

As one of Tasmania’s most experienced birders, Els Wakefield has a remarkable eye for detail and an exceptional ability to convey a bird’s distinguishing characteristics. Her book is both a memoir of a lifetime exploring and learning about the natural environment, and a compendium of Lutruwita/T...

🦜🦜MAD DASH TO MELALEUCA FUNDRAISER🦜🦜
Friends of the Orange-bellied Parrot (FoOBP)

A small team is banding together to undertake the South Coast Track during the first week of December this year, from Cockle Creek west to Melaleuca, in under 50 hours. They are doing this on behalf of FoOBP with funds raised to reach the organisation, and also using this as an opportunity to advocate for the 50 year anniversary of the Australasian Society of Zookeeping (ASZK). On the ASZK website, they have set up a page to publicise their hike, and are displaying the logos and endorsements of those involved and those supporting.

: In another massive win for wildlife, Coles has officially removed all second-generation rat poisons (SGARs) from shelves, with Mitre 10 and IGA joining Bunnings in a commitment to remove SGARS by 30 June.

Our supporters made it clear that removing these long-lasting poisons from retail shelves was critical in protecting wildlife and reducing further preventable deaths. Now, these calls have finally been heard.

The recent announcements are 10 months ahead of the regulator’s recommendation for a full retail ban of these wildlife-killing poisons. After many years of campaigning and thousands of submissions to the regulator, this win belongs to you.

The next step is now in the hands of Minister Julie Collins to legislate a full retail ban.

Head to: https://birdlife.org.au/protect-aussie-birds-from-lethal-sgar-rat-poisons/ and use our pre-filled email tool and send a message directly to the Minister, let’s get this done 🦉

TASMANIAN NATIVE-HEN / PIYURA

The Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre (TAC) have given their support for the general public to use the palawa kani name for Tasmanian Native-hens, 'piyura', and were pleased to hear that many people are already doing so.

The TAC advises that piyura is the correct surviving name for native-hens: the name triabunna is incorrect. Piyura comes from the Swanport/Oyster Bay language region.

For those interested, palawa kani does not pluralise common nouns so piyura can refer to one bird or multiple. For example: 'I spotted a young piyura' and 'I spotted a family of piyura' are both correct.

The scientific name for Tasmanian Native-hen/piyura is Tribonyx mortierii.
