We wanted to give a shout out to all the champions who attended yesterday's Identifying Scams workshops held at West Moonah Neighbourhood House, Goodwood Community Centre, Tasmania and Bucaan Community House. We were so happy to see so many people coming to the sessions to safeguard themselves against an ever-growing trend. Thank you to Deb from Glenorchy City Council for a great collaboration!

HEADS UP LAUNCESTON

Australia is rolling out a brand new emergency warning system called AusAlert, and Launceston has been selected as one of the trial locations during June 2026.

On Monday 15th June at 11:00am, AusAlert will be testing the system on phones and devices in Launceston.

What to expect:
✅ A test alert will appear on your screen with a loud alert tone
✅ It will clearly be labelled as a TEST – no action needed
✅ It works on most phones made since 2019

This test alert will be a ‘Priority Alert’. If you or someone you know may feel unsafe when receiving this test and/or other priority alerts you can configure your device to not receive them.

Want to turn off Priority alerts?

📱 iPhone/Apple watch: Settings → Notifications → scroll to AusAlert at bottom of page → toggle off Priority AusAlert

🤖 Android/tablet and smartwatches: Settings → Notifications → Safety and Emergency → Wireless Emergency Alerts → toggle off Priority AusAlert

For more info, visit ausalert.gov.au

This week, RDA Tasmania‘s Trish Tinkler spoke all things Digital Uplift with The Everyday Technologist, Kevin O‘Flaherty!

Kevin has written a great book called The Scam Self-Defence Handbook and we’re all hooked. It’s a simple and practical book that helps people take control of their technology by demystifying how scams evolve and what to look out for. Kevin has a passion for making technical concepts easy to understand for everyone.

We also talked about the future of AI, what safeguarding is coming for Australians, and how people can regain control of the technology they own. It was great to be able to discuss the work we are doing at Digital Uplift with a fellow educator and we’re grateful for the interest Kevin has shown in the programme.
