Everyone's hunting for Easter eggs in Taylor Swift's Patient Zero. We found red flags. π₯π©
Swifties love a hidden clue, and so do we. So we sat down with Taylor's new video, directed by Swift herself, with the Grace & Grit practice lens firmly on. Here's what we spotted.
π© The matching outfits. Dakota Johnson's character wears the same clothes and the same red lipstick as his first wife. Fans are calling it a mirror. We call it a pattern. His behaviour doesn't start or stop with one partner. It moves with him to the next.
π© The drinking fight. She's unwell, confused, and he tells her she's had too much. Making her the problem while he controls what's really going on? That's the heart of coercive control.
π© The car ride. He frightens her on purpose, then compares her to "her". Fear, shame and comparison, all in one scene, and every one of them is a choice.
π© The charming host. Everyone at the gala adores him. Charm is part of the strategy. It isolates her, because who would believe her?
π© The grey house. Taylor has said the house stands for a relationship gone cold. Beautiful, expensive, and utterly isolating. Money doesn't buy safety.
π© The tombstone. She isn't his first. His first wife is dead. A history of violence towards former partners is one of the most serious risk signs we have.
π© "Run." The ghost's warning is a powerful moment. But here's our Safe & Together Institute challenge: run can't be the whole safety plan. Leaving is often the most dangerous time. The real question is what the people and systems around her, and around him, are doing to hold him accountable.
Taylor built this video to be decoded. We hope it gets people decoding the relationships around them too: in friendship groups, workplaces and families.
