We need an economy that works for people, not corporate profit. A government that represents everyone, not just a few corporate and billionaire donors. And, a movement capable of delivering it.

To win that we need to build real, meaningful connections with everyday people.

Join us in Hobart on 9 July and hear how you can get involved, and start taking the first big steps towards building the movement.

Did you know that Australian beer drinkers pay more tax each year than gas exporters? 🍻
TCC members recently met with the Hon Rebecca White MP to discuss how unfair that is.
We think gas exporters should pay their fair share - do you agree?

All welcome! Register for this free event via the link in the post below 👇

With the current fuel crisis, many Tasmanians are bearing the brunt of the shortcomings of our current public transport system.

Join passionate community members, local leaders, elected representatives, and transport experts for an open discussion on the impacts of the fuel crisis on commuting.

This interactive forum will include a workshop activity, testimonies from community members and a special presentation from Steven Burgess, Australasia’s leading voice regarding people-focused urban movement and loveable places + QnA session.

Date: 24th June
Time: 5:30-7pm
Venue: Girl Guide Hall, Howrah Community Centre
Free entry, RSVP here: https://events.humanitix.com/clarence-community-transport-forum

Come along and share your ideas, ask questions, and be a part of the conversation, as we talk about the challenges bus users face and ways to make commuting more accessible, equitable, and reliable for everyone in Clarence.

A little more about our guest speaker Steven -

Steven Burgess is a change agent for villages, towns and cities. He brings 30+ years’ experience as a transport engineer and urban strategist to reform the balance between car space and economic space in towns and cities all over the world. He uses prosperity and happiness as a driver for better places, and structures land use and movement strategies to achieve just that. Steven has developed urban strategies for a significant number of town centres with the Complete Streets mantra of Stick, Stop, Stay, Spend (+ smile). He uses more appropriate moving patterns to induce longer stays and bigger spends in town centres.

He has also developed dozens of town centre car parking, walking, bike riding and public transport strategies. Steven is the author of ‘Complete Streets - Guidelines to Urban Street Design’ published in 2010 and was a contributor to two other international street making publications. He is an international keynote speaker on people places and of course parking, having spoken at events all around Australia, New Zealand, North America, South America, Europe and the UAE.'

With climate change likely to accelerate extreme weather in Australia, planned retreat – moving people and infrastructure away from high risk areas – will grow only more important.

But planned retreat often provokes intense backlash from communities on the front line of climate change. Councils and state governments are generally reticent to have this conversation.

Critical minerals are considered ‘critical’ to the world’s economic wellbeing; eg nickel, manganese, lithium, and cobalt are needed to make batteries for the clean energy future.

Rare earths are a category of critical minerals. They’re used for super-strong magnets in EVs and wind turbines and tiny magnets in smartphones. They’re not particularly rare. ‘Rare’ is related to ‘rarely mined’ because until recently, we had little use for them.

Australia has an abundance of critical minerals including rare earths. The challenge is processing them. Australia has been exporting raw minerals off-shore for processing but that’s about to change. Two new critical mineral processing facilities have opened at ANSTO (Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation).

News that the IPCC has deleted RCP8.5 has climate deniers mocking a process of which they are clearly clueless.

RCPs are the pathways developed by the IPCC in 2011 to represent the possible climate change scenarios under various levels of societal response.

The elimination of fossil fuels would result in the best case scenario (RCP2.6) while no fossil fuel reduction would have presented the worst case scenario (RCP8.5).

The clean energy revolution has now taken RCP8.5 off the table. The significant displacement of coal and gas by solar and wind has averted the worst possible climate catastrophe.

We're not out of the woods - there remain significant risks associated with the remaining scenarios - but averting RCP8.5 shows us how much climate action works.

Every fraction of a degree of warming avoided means a safer world.

V2G in Australia has to overcome a number of obstacles - setting the right standards, approving cables, inverter and charging systems, designing network connections and negotiating tariffs.

Perhaps the biggest hurdle is how to get the EV makers to extend their battery warranty to cars that are not just charging from the grid, but sending power back to the grid.

A small scale trial has been extended with a five-fold expansion but the results seem distant. In the meantime, check out this article and read the comments. Perhaps V2L is enough for the time being??
