This ABC News feature highlights how cooperative housing is helping people find long‑term stability, community connection and affordable homes, even as rents continue to rise across Australia.
At Common Equity, this is exactly what we see every day: when housing is community‑led, and values‑driven, it works.
If you’ve ever wondered what a real alternative to the private rental market looks like, this story is well worth a read.

What if the sudden improvement in Iain's life, and the extra $600 a month in his pocket, can be traced back to a single policy decision made by a federal minister in the 1980s?

Programs like the City of Marion’s In Our Street initiative highlight how powerful collective action can be. The program encourages neighbours to come together to identify small, achievable sustainability goals - from waste reduction and shared gardens to improving how common areas are cared for - all through collaboration and local decision making.

This approach strongly reflects the principles of cooperative living. When people are involved in decisions that affect their shared environment, they are more likely to take ownership, support one another and build lasting connections.

Continuing our Harmony Week celebrations, our team marked Harmony Day with a Taste of Harmony shared lunch. Everyone contributed dishes inspired by different cultures, bringing people together through food and conversation.

Common Equity Housing SA is currently seeking Technical Directors to join the Board and help guide the future of cooperative and community housing in South Australia.

The critical appointment of a suitably experienced Finance Director, is ideally for a candidate with strong financial expertise who can provide oversight, strategic financial guidance, and support sound governance across the organisation. The position is integral and chairs the Risk and Finance Committee.

Another opportunity is for a Board Director with specialist expertise, where we are particularly interested in individuals with experience in legal, property development, innovation, or strong commercial and business acumen. These skills will help strengthen the diversity of capability on the Board as the organisation continues to grow and deliver positive housing outcomes for our members and the community.

These are exciting opportunities to contribute to an organisation committed to cooperative housing, strong governance, and community impact.

🧡 Harmony Week is here! 🧡

At Common Equity, our communities are built on the belief that everyone deserves to feel safe, valued, and included - no matter their culture, language, or life story.

Harmony Week is a time to reflect on what brings us together. It’s about listening, learning, sharing, and celebrating the rich diversity that strengthens our cooperative communities every day.

Because at Common Equity, everyone belongs.

The Common Equity team came together with the women on the Common Equity Board to celebrate the incredible women who shape, support and strengthen the cooperative housing sector.

We also want to acknowledge the many women living in co-ops and contributing to their communities every day; Through leadership, participation, compassion, and the countless unseen efforts that make co-op living successful.

From governance to grassroots, women are at the heart of our communities.

Strong women build strong co-ops, and strong co-ops build stronger communities.

We celebrate and thank all the women who help make co-op housing thrive. 💜
