🎣 BIG news for Perth fishers - the iconic Ammo Jetty is set for a huge comeback!

A major step has been taken towards building the brand-new T-head Ammo Jetty at Woodman Point, with construction contracts now awarded for the $17.3 million redevelopment.

This was announced before this weekend's storm damage to the existing jetty - and we hope to see speedy progress made to the construction phase.

For generations of West Aussies, Ammo Jetty has been one of Perth’s most loved land-based fishing spots - producing everything from herring, squid and whiting to salmon and even Spanish mackerel.

The new jetty will deliver safer, better and more accessible fishing, including a substantial new 50m T-head that will more than double fishing space in deeper water.

Recfishwest’s Levi De Boni, who grew up fishing the old Ammo Jetty, said the project means a lot to the community.

“It’s a place that holds a lot of memories for many West Aussies,” Levi said.

“Having more space on the new T-head and better access to deeper water will make a massive difference at one of Perth’s truly iconic fishing locations.”

Great to see this exciting project moving forward for the metro fishing community 🙌 Read more here https://bit.ly/3S0e9AV

The project has been guided by a working group including Recfishwest, Fishability, Transport WA, City of Cockburn, and other agencies.

A Hazardous Fishing Alert has been issued for all fishers between Jurien Bay and Albany from Thursday 28th to Friday 29th, with large swells and elevated wave heights moving across much of our coastline.🌊

We run these Hazardous Fishing Alerts in partnership with the Bureau of Meteorology to help notify fishers of dangerous fishing conditions. It is important you put your safety first if you plan to fish in these areas during this time and notify anyone thinking of wetting a line.

INFO:
Between Jurien Bay and Albany:
- West to south-westerly waves with swell heights to around 3-3.5m between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin from Thursday morning and swell period of 12-14 seconds.
- Swell possibly just reaching 3.0m for remaining areas between Jurien Bay and Albany. Swell easing below 3m before sunrise on Friday.
- A large swell of possibly over 5m is due to arrive later in the week across our southwest coast

No fish is worth your life, so put your safety first.

Make sure you download the Bureau of Meteorology's app to keep track of forecasts and warnings in real-time, even when out of range.

Big upgrades are coming to WA’s busiest metro boat ramp 🎣🚤

The ageing western ramps at Woodman Point will be replaced with new floating jetties as part of a $4.8 million State Government marine infrastructure package.

With nearly 30,000 vessel launches every year, Woodman Point is WA's busiest boat ramp and a vital gateway to Cockburn Sound, Garden Island, Carnac Island and Perth’s offshore fishing.

The upgrades will make launching safer and easier for the thousands of fishers, crabbers and boating families who use the facility each year - while continued FREE parking at the precinct is also a big win. Are you reading this Town of East Fremantle???

Works are expected to start later this year, with completion scheduled for 2027.

Donate to help support Steven Mattaboni’s family.

Recfishwest is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Steven Mattaboni, who was bitten by a shark while spearfishing off Rottnest on the weekend

For all those who would like to contribute, there is a gofundme page to support Steven’s wife and two young daughters – you can donate here https://bit.ly/4fn1fGQ

Steve was a respected member of the fishing community. As a member of Recfishwest’s Spearfishing Working Group, Steve was a passionate advocate for spearfishing and the broader recreational fishing community. He generously gave his time, knowledge, and experience to improve fishing and his contributions will be greatly missed.

Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Steve’s family, friends and all those impacted by this devastating tragedy. We also acknowledge and thank the emergency responders and Steve’s friends for their efforts to save him under incredibly difficult circumstances.

The community has spoken! ✊🏽

A huge thank you to everyone who got behind the proposed Quinns Fishing Platform project and showed their support. 🎣👏🏼

Following the City of Wanneroo’s Council meeting on the 28th of April, a motion calling for further consultation on the project was voted against, meaning the project will now proceed as planned with construction expected to begin in November 2026.

We’ve been advised by the City of Wanneroo that the strong community response and positive feedback played an important role in demonstrating just how much support there is for better fishing access in the northern suburbs.

This platform will create a safe, accessible land-based fishing opportunity for families, kids, seniors and fishers of all abilities.

Thanks again to everyone who took the time to sign the petition. Community voices genuinely made a difference. 🙌

🎣 REMINDER: Fishers have until TOMORROW to have their say on the City of Stirling’s proposal to ban fishing in 16 lakes and wetlands across the local government area.

Recfishwest opposes these blanket bans and believes recreational fishing should continue to be managed under State fisheries legislation — not through local government laws.

Most fishers do the right thing and should not lose access to local waterways because of the actions of a few.

These lakes provide important, accessible fishing opportunities for families, kids and local communities, along with all the social and wellbeing benefits that come with wetting a line close to home.

If you care about protecting fishing access, now is the time to speak up.

Have your say before the consultation closes tomorrow here bit.ly/3Pjf7qU

One of the West Kimberley’s most iconic fishing events 🎣

The Buccaneer Classic sees fishers heading deep into some of WA’s most remote and spectacular waters and it’s those same fishers who can play a vital role in protecting them.

We teamed up with the Australian Border Force to talk to fishers attending the briefing night at the Mary Island Fishing Club, Derby to show how easy it is to report suspicious activity through the Recfishwest app.

If you’re out there and something doesn’t look right - report it. Together, we can help protect our northern waters.
